Well, it's not 'so slow' exactly, but I expected it to be alot faster. I just built this thing with a c2d and 2gb of corsair ram. It's got a seagate 320gb 7200.10 in it aswell, but unfortunately, it's not exactly speeding around and you can really notice the slowdown when I'm multitasking. What should I do? Get more ram? I was thinking about getting another 2 gigs or even 4? Get another harddrive so I could benefit from having another supply of cache? I've got an Asus p5b deluxe board, btw.

Also we need what operating system, and what games or applications you use.
Bear in mind that this may simply be a driver issue that has been forgotten and may give you what you want.
Some simple tips (as i dont know how expert you are):
Often times, the hard drive being the slowest 'bottleneck' component, it hasnt been set up correctly.
Are you familiar with fiddling in the BIOS? If so, have you enabled 32bit bus master etc?
And in the OS is DMA etc all enabled?
Have you installed all drivers that came with the motherboard?
After that, have you updated the same drivers?
Have you installed a graphics driver?
Get back to us and maybe we can help.

Have you tired overclocking it? Your spec looks good enough to have a go at it, that will give you a nice bump in speed.

You should now be able to check My System for my exact hardware components. After that, I'm running Windows XP Pro; The system is new and I haven't even had a chance to install half of the programs I'll be using, so I haven't run into any problems with programs slowing down as such, just my startup screen kinda hangs for a bit b4 I can type in my account password, and copying of files and stuff aint zipping around like I thought it would with 2 Gb of ram and a c2d cpu! No I didn't do the 32bit bus master thing, I'ma get right on that. The motherboard drivers are all installed and updated, tho I haven't flashed the bios yet. Also the graphics card drivers are installed and updated. Dunno what DMA is tho...

I'm afraid of overclocking. Never done it b4, sounds scary... only computer boffins do that sort of thing, no?
A faster CPU and more RAM won't speed up copying of files as that will be hard drive limited and to be honest hard drive speeds have hardly improved over the last couple of years. You could run some benchmarks and compare them with similar systems.

Overclocking is easy, but go slow.
Increase the front side bus (FSB) by 5%, then reboot, and test windows,
Do the same again a few times, and if you hit a problem (such as an automatic sudden reboot or failure to load properly) go back into the BIOS and reduce a bit.
Be aware that when you overclock, you are stressing different bits of the system at the same time, so whilst your CPU for example might be easily able to take a 50% overclock, your RAM might only go 10%. You can change dividers and stuff to get around that, but that is lesson number 2. To start with, try simply increasing the FSB a bit and see where you go. Don't change voltage or anything like that, leave all the rest on auto.
As for DMA, Windows XP should enable that by default. Right click on 'My Computer', go into device manager (if you know how, otherwise let me know) and check that you have no yellow exclamation marks etc. In the hard drive section there, under one of the tabs, it should tell you that DMA is working fine. (I'm on a Linux system right now so cant check exactly)

It is a fresh install of windows yes?
Update the bios, its one less thing to worry about. Do it from a USB stick, and use EZ flash in the bios.
Have you grabbed the latest chipset drivers from the Intel website?
Have you grabbed all the latest drivers for any other hardware you might have?
Have you manually entered the RAM timings in the bios? If not, it is probably running the RAM slower than it was intended.

I've noticed a significant slowdown in XP recently on my A64 rig. It could be that I need to do a fresh install, however I suspect some of the recent Windows "updates" are bloating it down...
Sounds like the things you are finding slow aren't limited by your CPU or RAM but by your HDD e.g. loading XP from hard disk to memory during start-up and copying files from disk to disk.
Assuming you have the correct drivers etc installed, the only thing you can do is get a new hard drive like a raptor, or create a RAID.
Start -> Run
type the word "msconfig" in the boc and hit return.
The window that pops up....check the tab on the right (Startup) and tell me how many things are in the list?
I bet you got half the worlds apps running in the background.
DOnt change anything yet....just tell us howmany things are in it.
