    overclocking and heat

all things being equal (same HSF and case, same fan speeds, probably quite cramped with the same mobo, gpu, etc, etc.)

Would an e4300 be likely to run cooler/as-hot/hotter when compared to, say, an e6600, or an e2160, assuming both chips are running at the same GHz? Perhaps if someone's spotted the temperature stats in a review somewhere?

I'm leaning towards a uATX build and fancy keeping the noise down as much as is possible. With the coming price cuts and new 6x50 cpus the price : performance advantage (assuming an overclock) of the lower end C2D chips will decreasing a bit, so if it'd mean a significantly cooler-running cpu I'd rather go for the better-at-stock processors...

I would have said that they would be the same, or very similar, thats assuming that you are also feeding them both the same voltage.

The other thing to consider, is that practically every CPU reports the temps differently, so it is never going to be exact.

safest bet for a uATX is an e6600 with a light clock imo. Should keep nice and cool.

you never know if you're going to get a good chip when you buy an e4300 and plan a big overclock for it.

My temps increased by 2 degrees (which is probably rounding error ) when I overclocked my e6400 from 2.13 stock to 3 using the same stock voltage. They only increased when I popped the voltage up to try and reach 3+. Decided to leave as is as good balance of performance / heat / life of parts.

In contrast my Northbridge voltage when adjusted +0.1v is very hot.

If you want quiet I would suggest using a massive heat sink like the tuniq tower 120, this should allow you to passively cool the CPU with no fan at all.

you woud only need the fan on when your gaming/intensive CPU activities, this will make it absolutely silent when doing work etc and icey cold when your playing games.

btw i doubt you would hear the fan over a game anyway

Good to hear! (except for the NB )

I'm currently thinking SUGO SG01 so it'd be the silverstone nt06 lite cooler (air moved by having the psu extract air off the nt06 I believe) although if I decide to look at one of the compact mini-midi-tower (Antec solo and Lian-Li A05 and PC7-plus currently look nice to me) cases I might be able to cram in a tall semi-passive cooler.

    I might not...

...then again I use the PC for quite a bit of other stuff and it's nice to not be able to hear it humming and whirring wherever possible, esp as this is a small flat and the only place for the PC is the livingroom. Maybe some sort of cpu-throttling app like on laptops would be good for when the pc is only doing gentle tasks?

Yeah, you could cool it passively while you work so its silent, just keep the CPU at stock, then turn the fans on when you need the extra cooling for games.

Would your budget stretch to water cooling? super silent + huge overclocking potential.

Not sure what I want to set my budget at. Watercooling would be fun but not sure I want to dabble with it for a while yet. If I do I'll want it to both fit in my case and be stable during transit (LAN parties etc) ... I'll cross that bridge when I come to it I think - start with air, see how it all goes...
