    Building a new rig

Right so im bored of my laptop as it keeps dropping fps oddly.. so im going to sell it

And im going to build a new pc.

Im pretty sure im going to be going for a 6600 and just a basic asus board, i plan to overclock a bit, thinking about possibly the new antec p182 case..

The main question is, do i need 4 gig of ram? And what good price ram these days ( i lost track on the market since 939 tbh) will be ok for overclocking?

And the second main question is, i currently have a nince lg 17" screen will an 8800 gts run all games on it high settings with nice fps? As in the past i have been a sucker and always gone for the ultra which is overkill on the 17" i probably think?

I mainly play cs:s so im sure it will be fine on that with highest everthing, just incase i want to play something new?
And finally should this all be achivable for around 5-600?

    help and comments needed

Sounds pretty much like what I built a few months back. Unless you are running vista stick with 2GB of RAM its more than enough.

good mobo for the job would be the one I got which is the asus p5b e-plus.. It's about £80 and its a nice little overclocker. Should get your e6600 to 3.2GHz without any trouble.

My 8800 GTS runs CS:S on my 20" screen..full graphics at around 180 - 250 fps depending on the level and amount of HDR. It will probably max out a lot of the time on a 17"

You will be looking at the top end of your budget to do it..maybe spend a little more to get real quality

Well when you say real quality wherre do you mean?

I will be runninig vista i would think.. Cant see it having to many issues with the above can you?

I like my 17 i dont really want bigger..

Any places where i can make a seensible improvement? i thought that would do the job fine?

To get anywhere near budget you will have to have a cheapy GTS..it's not problem really as they are all the same one but you may miss out on a good warranty etc..

with 4gb of pc5300/pc6400 and the 8800 i'd say you were looking more along the lines to £750 - £800

Oh right, fair enough, i guess the budget is flexable really, i just dont want to do what i do most times i build, and buy WAY over what i need..

Im going to wait till next month and buy the lot at the same time, or i might buy a bundle.. Are these a good idea?

£800 will build you exactly what you want I think and all the parts you have picked are very sensible choices for what you want to do.

If you want to leave it slightly more future proof try the asus P5K's as they have native support for 1333mhz fsb chips soon to be released.

well these basic bits are what i'm looking at and come in just a smidge over £450,

    E6600
    Scythe Ninja
    Asus P5K
    Enermax Liberty
    Antec P182

if you went for the nine hundred case it'll save you £20, the psu is what i'm gonna get as it's chunky enough for what i need and it's modular and as a brand has a good rep. as for memory, i have the same a mike at the moment which is the geil ddr2 ultra and can be had for little expense Geil DDR2 6400 and will keep 2 out of the 3gig (the 2gig kit is no more than a month old). as you've said you have a monitor, so all that left really is the gfx (i can recommended the bfg 8800gts 320 oc), hdd (i use samsung spinpoints - quiet and reliable) but down to preferance and opinions, optical drives, keyboard and mouse, and vista and not to vista.

but i'm waiting for the price cuts to take effect and see where the land lies as it might change the direction of what i buy eg. if the cpus come down enough then might free up cash to get a Q6600 on the same mobo or stick with the E6600 and bet a better mobo etc etc etc. although saying that 6-7 weeks is gonna be a long time to wait knowing that a better machine is on the way

nope it's an intel p35 chipset, and an 8800gts should run just fine

the enermax psu's are very good dunt dont count out something like the corsair hx whisper 520w Thats what I bought with mine and its great.. totally silent. The scythe ninja is a great cooler (also what i bought lol) it will allow your pc to run very quiet.

The antec 900 is alright if you want the lights etc.. I prefer the p182 but both will do a great job.

the only real differences in the 2 boards is that the p5kc has native ddr3 support and apart from that a minor differences in the internal i/o (looking on scans pages) there's not much in it.
