Sata install help please

Guys, today i bought an hitachi 250 gig sata drive, what i want to do is to have XP pro on the the sata drive and have my old IDE drive as a backup drive.

I have Norton Ghost and Partition Magic 8.0.

Soo i thought it would be a simple case of using Ghost to copy the IDE C: drive over to the new SATA drive, reboot enter the bios to alter the boot sequence, reboot and away i would go. WRONG

Could someone tell me please what i a) have done wrong or B) what i really need to do.

I did the same thing a while ago (IDE -ghost-> sata), you need to install your mobo SATA drivers before you ghost. There may be another (easier/quicker) way of doing it, but that's the way i did it.


edit: what is actually wrong? no boot? it may be something else

Hiya, i did end up doing a repair xp install, F6 to install drivers, the repair seemed to go ok, until reboot time, then it just looped through post to XP loading screen again and again and so on, i managed to get into safe mode once, then rebooted and the same all over again.

I now have reverted back to th eIDE drive and xp is up and running again, i have just reformatted the sata drive, ready for when i have an idea what to do.

Check the manufacturer's website for the latest drivers. I had this problem once and it was due to drivers.

Can you access the SATA Drive, when you boot XP from your IDE drive?
If this is the case, there is no driver problem.
Make a Boot CD for Ghost and clone the IDE drive over to the SATA drive.
Then I would unplug the IDE Drive and see if XP comes up.
If not, start your XP cd and try a repair, that should solve the problem.
After everything is working, you are good to go to reattach your IDE drive

Can i do more from here do you think, or am i waisting my time.

P.s i still have the ide drives disconected.

TBH I've found it a bit hit and miss when cloning windows system drives IDE to SATA. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't even with the correct sata drivers etc installed.

The other way round usually always works.

Sure is looking like if i want to have the SATA as the main boot a fresh install may well be the only way to go.

I have not completely given up though, so any more ideas anyone.

Hard to say at the moment, as there are no logfiles which are saying where it stoped during the boot process.
I'm not aware of any debug options, but there might be some which you then could turn on when in safe mode.
But if the system comes up in safe mode, everything should be fine

F8 before Windows boots gives you boot options.

Thanks to all who replied, i decided to da a fresh install in the end, seems to have done the trick, boots fine, now just got the mammoth task of reinstalling all my apps.

Anyway, the reason a Ghost wouldn't work isn't so much the lack of the correct drivers, more that Windows still tries to boot from the PATA device, as you've not told it any different. I'm not sure of an easy way to rectify that, but in theory, installing the drivers, then running Sysprep (which goes through some of the basic reinstall functions, such as redetecting hardware) should work fine - it's just a bit of a faff for such little gain. Much better doing a clean install as you did.

Your only other option I'm aware of was changing any BIOS parameter so that SATA devices are seen as PATA ones, which usually works.

//edit: Oh yeah, if you used Acronis True Image to image the drive, rather than Ghost and use Universal Restore (which plugs onto True Image), you can add drivers to the new drive and it triggers something which usually lets Windows boot.
