NAS (Synology Cube Station) and Wireless

    Hi

I have one of these wireless routers in a downstairs room:
    http://www.netgear.com/Products/Rout...ys/DG834N.aspx

and I am looking at one of these to attatch to it:
Synology Cube Station CS407e ( or in fact any other type of Thecus / Synology etc Networked drive)

Would I be safe in assuming that all I have to do is plug the Cube into the Netgear router for it to show up as part of a network which I can access from the PC upstairs or any other wireless enabled device?

    Thanks

It won't just magicaly appear, you will need to do some setting up of the device.

You can download the instructions from Synology before you get it, just to give you an idea of what is involved

Thanks Funkstar - appreciate that it will take some set-up but will the Cube work attatched to the router over a wireless network i.e. is speed likely to be impacted baring inmind the stated (though not real world) connection speeds?

as far as it is concerned, it is connected to an ethernet network. How that network is structured matters not a jot. Wireless will have a performance impact compaired to hard wired, especially when transfering a lot of data or streaming video etc. But other than that it should work just fine.

It is possible you could have setup problems on wireless, if so connect temporarily with an enternet cable if you can. I've seen some systems that don't like the initial setup done over wireless.

    That's wireless for you

I sometimes wonder how many people now have faster broadband (8Mbit ADSLMax, up to 24Mbit ADSL2+ and now very fast cable) than their wireless network can cope with? Sure 802.11g connects at 56Mbit but latency can be rubbish, same with the actual data transfer rate. Combine that with really cheap access points and routers and I'm not surprised some people are realising that the advertised speeds are not attainable
