By my reckoning, they're currently selling them at a loss based on the supposed current pricing of $530.

After the drops, they should be somewhere around £160 cost, but I'm guessing we may see £175 retail?

I dunno if im right or wrong on this (im sure someone will let me know), but isn't going Quad core totally pointless at the moment. Surely there are no benefits to be gained.

From what i have read, even the Dual Cores arent fully utilised so, doesn't it make no sense to go Quad Core when nothing actually uses it?

If i am wrong, then what are the benefits now? Don't worry about what can be gained next year though as im sure the technology will be utilised in the near future. When it is utilised, the price will be a 3rd of what they are now.

That's my worry with it too. That and the fact that the quad core implementation from Intel could be a lot better couldn't it? It'll be interesting to see how AMD's quad solution stacks up.

If you do a lot of rendering, encoding or virtual machine work, a £160 quad core is a total bargain.

I am sure games will be using them quite efficiently soon also.

160 is much more tempting - but i'm in no rush - i only just hammered together my C2D system
I think it'll take a while for games to really be designed for this many cores - dual core penetration is still pretty low in the mass market (just look at the steam stats).

For many users, yes, but it does very much depend on the user.

For me, quad core is very usable. I spend a lot of time compiling software, and although the compiler isn't multithreaded it does fork multiple processes (well, the compilation scripts do) so directly benefits from more cores (or CPUs) and more memory.

I do a lot of other very processor intensive stuff too, so setting a number of jobs going and still having a core left to browse the web or check email means I can do more stuff at once. I've been using 4 and 8-way workstations and servers on UNIX for years, so now it's nice to have similar power on my Linux desktop at very reasonable prices (LOL - my first 8-way SGI IRIX server was ~£100K)

Seems so to me as well. That 'Alan Wake' game is supposed to be coming out in October and will utilise 4 cores, but game release dates are always being pushed back and back, and even so it certainly isn't worth buying a quad for one game. Best to wait and see as you say, unless you do a lot of vm stuff, etc as others have pointed out.
