6400 RAM running @ only 400MHZ on P35-DS4

Hi,

I'm pretty new to all this overclocking stuff, so I want to make sure I do this right.

I got my new PC today & had a look in CPU-Z (after playing some games of course ). It shows this:



Can someone help me get it running at the specified speeds please

It runs at twice that, as it is DDR2, so 800mhz. That is normal.

Edit: Sorry, not clear. 400mhz is what the bus is running at. This is what DDR2 800's FSB is, as it has a 2x multi of the bus, being DDR2.

DDR2 667 would show as 333mhz
DDR2 1066 would show as 533mhz

Go into the bios and do ctrl +f1, that will give you the screen to enter your RAM timings.

At the moment, it is reading the SPD from the RAM, which are just relaxed timings that will work on most boards.

Wopps, just noticed that it says fsb:dram is 2:3, so your RAM is running at 600mhz (400*3/2)

As clunk said, look in your BIOS.

Timings are how fast the RAM does various things, not sure exactly. Lowering the timings improves performance, but make it harder to keep a high speed, so it's a balance.

I set the timings to 4-4-4-12 and it blue screened earlier

Have you got your ram set to the correct voltage? If not thats why you got a blue screen.and your ram is running at 800 mhz (400*2) cpu-z reports actual ram speed .

You need to set it to the voltage the manufacturer recommends..... either find this out from somewhere, or tell us what ram you've got and we'll tell you

Craig, put your system specs in your "my system" bit of your profile, itll make it easier for people to help you.

The voltage is usually written on the RAM sticks themselves on the label.

Making the rather large assumption that you have a Gigabyte board and Corsair memory...

you need to use +0.3V to get to the rated 2.1V. The default DDR2 voltage on the Gigabyte boards is 1.8V. unfortunately it doesn't actually point this out in the BIOS.

Is this the ram you have?
If so, you need to run it at 2.2V (or 2.1), or it will BSOD. (the ram gets quite hot also)

Just checked in my BIOS and +0.3v is in red... are you guys sure it's safe to set it to +0.3?

The gigabyte bios will complain (DDR2 should be 1.8v), but if the manufacturers website says it's safe at 2.2, then it can run at 2.2 (or 2.1).
