    Blast from the past - overclocking a Barton 2500+ to a 3200+

    Hi all,

I got this PC back in 2003 or so and I'm about to hand it over to the parents. One thing it struggled with was overheating so I took off the HS/F, gave everything a good clean, new thermal paste, reseated the CPU etc.

It all went back together nicely but I guess it detected that the CPU had been unseated and upon boot gave me a "Warning! CPU has been changed" error. I reset the bios and the error went away and it now boots nicely and seems fine.

The only problem is that resetting the BIOS reset the overclock on the CPU and it's now running at 1.09GHZ. The machine was bought pre-overclocked and I have no idea how to restore it to its overclocked status! The mobo is an Asus A7N8X delux and it's got 1.5GB of RAM in 3 sticks. There's a pair of sticks which I guess are both 512mb and they're PC3200, the other stick I can't get an ID on.

Thanks very much for your help!

Overclocking hasn't changed that much, just a matter of upping the FSB whilst watching your temps & voltages. Do a search on Hexus for "overclocking Barton Core" throws up scads of results
CPU-Z 'should' help identifying the ram.

    http://www.techtastic.ca/reviews3/mo...on-2500-2.html should help

before you try anything run cpu-z and check out all 3 sticks of ram to make sure theya re PC3200 and see what the common denominator for setting is, usually safe at cas3-4-4-8 2.6 volts. Then when the pc is stable you can try pushing the ram speeds down.

All you have to do is set the multiplier at default and the FSB to 200 from a default of 166. If that doesnt boot then add small amounts of voltage until its stable.

Re: Blast from the past - overclocking a Barton 2500+ to a 3200+

Thanks! I've never actually overclocked myself before so this was all a bit new to me. I've now got everything running at 3200+ speeds and it seems fine.

The RAM is a bit odd. It's all PC3200 but it's actually a pair of 256s and a single 1GB. The 1GB is in slot 2 - any problems here?

One thing that is concerning me though is that after applying the thermal paste I looked at the syringe and it's got a use by date of 2003. I wasn't aware this stuff could go off - is it ok or should I take it off and put some new stuff on?

AFAIK thermal compounds should be OK for ages as long as they are stored at room temperatures.

Since you have three sticks of RAM it will not run in dual channel mode meaning that there will be a slight performance hit unless the motherboard is not dual channel capable.

Default FSB for these boards was 200, and there was a lot of debate at the time, as to whether running sticks in three channels would negate the dual channel mode. The board has two controllers as opposed to the one for the A7N8-X so in theory the two channels occupied by the matched memory would still run in dual channel whilst the single stick would run in single channel, depending on which pair of dimm's were being accessed by the mobo.

If it runs okay and you are happy with it not a problem but if you can pick up a single 1GB stick of the 3200 (make sure the CAS latency is the same (ie) 2/2.5/3) from somewhere it would always be advisable to run with 2 x 1Gb sticks to maximise your ram's performance

Re: Blast from the past - overclocking a Barton 2500+ to a 3200+

Thanks again guys. If this was for my own use then I'd drop in another PC3200 slot at the expense of the 2x256s, but as it's for my parents and about the most challenging thing they'll do on it is fire up PS to scan some documents I think I'll leave it as is - it's served me well as a main machine since 2003!

Good news on the thermal compound!

I was talking about the default speed of the chip as the 2500+ has a default of 11* 166fsb while the 3200+ default fsb was 11*200.

Anyway Im glad your all sorted. I loved my 2500+ mobile barton core

I've still got my mobile 2400+ rig in the cupboard, I can't bear to get rid of it! Though I dusted it off & checked everything was still working a month or so back & it handles 720p just fine so we might use it as a HTPC in the new flat.

Oh god, for the love of the barton core, when life was so simple, Intel, why must life be so complicated??

    God bless you dfour!!

Re: Blast from the past - overclocking a Barton 2500+ to a 3200+

I'm still rocking my old Athlon XP 2600+ (Thoroughbred B) - and it's doing a fantastic job. I'm planning on having a bash at overclocking it once I've backed up all the essential financial information I've been keeping on it...
