    Insects in my monitor!

Ok, how do i rectify this?

Small insects are climbing inside my monitor, and leaving black marks I cant remove when they die. I know they're insects because I can see one now walking around!

    One has died and it's covered I'd estimate 8 / 9 pixels .

Is there any way to lift off the front screen (samsung 226bw) and clear them off, then put it back on?

Return the monitor as faulty and get it replaced in the same way you would as if you have loads of dead pixels. This is a design fault and is the seller/manufacturers problem.

Would some tape around the edges of the monitor stop 'em from getting in, or do they crawl in the vents at the back?

They have to take it back for a problem like that (claim not fit for purpose), unless you have damaged it in any way which could provide an opening How old is the monitor?

Its very new. I've not damaged it that I know of! But in samsungs warranty they say if you attatch anything - well I've fitted a new stand, basically unscrewed the old one and used the standard mounts.

Unfortunately the e-tailer said its no longer their warranty. Was bought in may I believe .

Did you buy it with a reduced warranty? If not, the retailer is responsible for the first 12 months, even if it is only to ship it back to samsung for you, and that is regardless of the extra onsite warranty that the manufacturer offers.

But, in this case, you may as well return it to samsung.

As long as you havent broken anything, and you can put it back exactly as it was, then you should be ok.

It doesn't matter, I would say its not fit for purpose if insects can get inside it, so its not a warranty issue..they have to take it back in this sort of situation I believe

google for "thunderfly" "tft" "monitor" and you will find loads of ways to get rid of them. I had 2 in my brand new 206bw and one died on the screen but I just let him fry and then tapped the side of the monitor (not the screen) till it fell down.

I doubt anyone will take an RMA for this because you can't manufacture a TFT to such tight tolerences. These flies are tiny and are attracted to the light of the TFT. I would suggest that you turn the monitor off when not using it as this will minimise the attraction. Some people put a kind of bug killer around the edge of the monitor.

    Nicked from another website.

    1. If they invade use a very bright torch ( like a halogen one) played on the screen to drive them to the edge.
    2. Be ready with a can of insectside containing the ingreient perethrin. this is deadly to thrips and just the fumes stop it dead in its horrid little tracks.
    3. when the insect has gone beyond the edge spray the insecticide onto a tissue after shaking the can. Make sure the tissue is well wetted and that fumes and vapour are rising from it. Quickly hold it near the vents at the point the insect entered the screen's frame. The fumes will kill it very quickly and it will not return.
    4. If the insect does die in the screen then apply the halogen torch from outside for a few 1 minute bursts. this seems to cook the thing enough to allow you, after a few hours, to tap the frame of the monitor , having positioned it so the insect has the shortest gravity route to the bottom and the thing will fall down out of sight. I have achieved this the one time one died in my monitor.
    5. As a preventative step every few days soak a tissue in the insectice specified above and wipe it around the monitors frame and vents, avoid the screen of course. They are so very sensitive to this stuff ( I think it is based on the natural compound Pyrethium) and die almost instantly from the vapour or contact with the deposit after a wipe over.

Cut up some laaaaaadies tights and tape them over the vents.. I've just taken delivery of some anti-thrip mesh which i'm going to tape over the vents on both my TV and monitor to prevent this.

Permethrin is a good idea tho - found some here: http://magellans.co.uk/store/Health_...ionSC561?Args=
