    Question Cleaning a CPU

    I want to remove my old cpu cooler and replace it with a better one, could sombody please tell me what i can use to clean off the old Thermal Paste from the CPU . I've never done this before so am not sure how to go about it but i know i have to get the old paste off and apply new for a good Thermal Contact. Any advice would be most appreciated thanks inadvance

    Isoprophyll alcohol with a lint free cloth to rub the old stuff off.

    A razor blade or something similar might be handy if you're having a tough time with it (note that it's for the thermal paste, not your wrists.)
    PHP Code:
    $s = new signature();

    isopropyl, ethanol (what i use, 80-90% stuff), meths, or even white spirit will do but the latter 2 contain other stuff in them so u may get a residue form on the surface of the chip.
    I dont like sig pics so i turn off sigs Which doesnt help when i dont know what ive written here! DOH!

    May I now introduce you to - http://forums.hexus.net/showthread.php?p=121731

    It's not perfect, but I'm sure many will find it useful as it covers the key points.

    Chemists might do it; I'd have thought boots would have it (you might have to ask at the counter)

    You can ask for Isopropyl Alchohol in chemists, most of them stock it.

    If they ask what it's for say it's for cleaning VCR and cassette deck heads, as you repair them, as that's it's most common use for over the counter purchasers.

    Be aware though, that if you look a bit like a dosser, they may refuse to serve it to you, thinking you're going to drink the stuff and get (literally) blind drunk.

    Honest, tis true, happened to me once
