There are plenty of circumstances when I have seen a New car sold with no discount and plenty when I have seen the same car sold with a £2000 discount, it will depend on current market conditions, targets, as well as the negociating awareness/skill of the salesperson/customer.

I would like to get the BEST deal I can, that is all I am after, and any input I get is gracefully received
The margins between building a car and selling it is massively huge, that's why car sellers can whack off big 'discounts', when you look at the average price of a PC they *might* make £100 off a PC, if they're lucky. Asking for a 10% discount on a PC is unreasonable.

My account manager told me a few weeks ago that there were going to be supply issues with LCD panels due to a shortage of a key component. I can't for the life of me think what it was though.

I'd expect Dell to be giving discounts out a bit easier at the moment - it's their end of quarter in a few days so they'll all want to be hitting their targets. Dell sales people aren't bonussed on how much profit they make, it's all down to the number of units they ship out of the door.

Sorry, without going into the car/pc market comparison (I only mentioned it initially as it is my own experience) no offer is as you put it 'unreasonable'.
It is down to the seller to accept or not, I was not rude, I did not force them in any way, and I was not dishonest. Dell chose to sell me that machine for a price close to my request.
I fail to see this 'sympathy' for an International multi billion pound corporation.

BTW FYI a 14% return on selling a PC is a considerably higher margin than Franchised Main dealers work to, alot of marques are lucky to make 2-3%.

My math might be a little off, but £100 of £2000 is 5%, and as I said, that's if they're lucky, in reality the margins are a lot slimmer. 2-3% on a first hand car for a dealer is quite a bit more, given that they cost sod all to build in comparison and sell for ~500% of their manufacture price, with the engine being the most expensive part, PC manufacturers could only dream of those kind of margins. PCs are expensive to build, expected to be cheap, and cost more to support because people are daft and uneducated in their use.

I'm being a bit pedantic here, but there is no such thing as free delivery from Dell. What they'll do is take the price of delivery and include it in the price of the system(s) you're buying so although delivery may show £0.00 on the order you're still paying for it.

Yep, I've just ordered a vostro 1500 for a friend. Base spec + upgraded truelife screen + 9 cell battery + 8600 card. Came to 598 on the website.

Best I could haggle them down to was 568 - wouldn't budge any further despite ringing off and leaving them with my telephone number for a couple of days.

I suspect, as has been mentioned in this thread already, getting discount off the new range is fairly difficult and at least for the first couple of months they are unlikely to move much on the standard prices - once the processors have 'moved on' and the vostros ain't new any more I'm sure they'll be discounting.

It would be interesting to know if there's a particular point in the month that dell are most likely to reduce stuff around......

I think you are confusing the Manufaturers cost in building and then what they sell that product to the retailer for and the difference between retailers trade price and the selling price.
And although I have no idea of manufacturing costs you do need to incorporate advertising,R&D,Testing etc etc etc.But anyways..............

BASICALLY all I was trying to illustrate, and the whole purpose of this thread was to see what sort of deals 'fellow minded hexalites' were getting from Dell. After all we are all consumers and all interested in helping each other get the best deals.........................I thought

    Looking plainly at the facts.

Dell DO discount laptops often around 10% even when the laptop is under say £800/900 and then the discounts get bigger...

If dell could not sell them at a profit after discounting them..they wouldn't sell them.

So to not ask..simply ASK for a discount would be foolish. If you for some reason wish to pay full price to do dell a favour..thats your business... but i'm after ever penny I can get off of it.

To answer the question on the previous page. I don't believe you do need to have a business account to buy through small business just get a quote on the net and then either pay for it on the net or call them to get a quote using the price you got off the web as a reference.
