Does my cooling need upgrading

Right as Im seriously tempted to go and get a Q660 in the next few weeks I was just wondering to myself if my cooling would be up to the job.

I currently have a PA120.2 which is hooked upto a E6400 with a tdx block (will change for a d-tek) a overclocked 8800gts (640mb) and then the pwm's on my quad gt. The PA120.2 has a couple of sharkoon 200's on it which I control to either 7v or full on 12v.

Does anyone think the rad would be able to take the Q6600 or would it be wise to replace it with a PA1120.3:O_o1:

And if I do need to replace it has anyone got one spare either for payment or PA120.2+payment. (yes Im cheeky):)

If you're gonna put a quad core in there in the same loop as the 8800, then I reckon you're gonna need a triple 120mm rad to get decent cooling for an oc The dual rad would just about cope at stock though

Not with undervolted fans it wont.

And neither will a triple PA.

If you can put up with higher CFM fans, you could just about manage it with your existing setup.

You could manage it with a PA120.3, with slightly lower powered fans.

You just need to work out your heatload, and then look at what each rad can dissipate using the fans that you plan on using.

You can see the 3 different types of fan give very different results.

Go to the psu calculator and calculate the heatload for your CPU and GPU, and then have a stab at what your mosfets and NB might be (50w each perhaps?).

A q6600 @ 3600Mhz with 1.5v Vcore will generate 227w of heat.

An overclocked GTS around 120w

Mosfets and NB around 100w

Sub Total 447w

+ 18w for the pump (assuming its an 18w pump).

Grand Total - 465w ish.

Have a look at the graph again, you can see that low rpm/cfm fans (nexus in the graph) arent going to do the trick for your heatload, even with a PA120.3.

Are those fans that you have the sharkoon 2000 rpm ones? about 75 cmf ish? if so, they should do the trick, but it wont be silent. For that, you would need another rad, or have to put up with higher temps.

This is why I failed maths, yeh the sharkoons are these, they do make a bit of noise @12v but I can live with that.

The only componets in the loop are the cpu gpu and vrm's as the northbridge has a nc-u6 on it and is warmish to the touch.

If I get a Q6600 Ill only overclock it to around 3.2~3.4 Im more of a fsb junkie, and Ill try it with my current setup if the temps are to high Ill have to get a pa120.3 and if that doesnt work Im stuck as I've got no space inside my pc for any other rads apart from a pa120.1 on the top. :angst:

Oh and would the G0 stepping help at all. ???

And its a 10w dcc.

you should be able to mod the DDC to 18W? what revision is it?

OK, well if there is no NB in the loop, that will help.

The G0 stepping might help, they have a lower heat output, but I'm not sure how they are when overvolted, they might be the same, dunno yet :)

A extra 120.1 would help if you can squeeze it in. The only real advantage would be that you can run lower speed/cfm fans.

Well I can get a PA120.1 ontop of the case inside, and have the PA120.3 hanging of the back like the PA120.2 currently is.

Now would pump-PA 120.3-cpu-PA 120.1-gpu-pwm-res-pump be ok ??? and is a 10w dcc going to be enough as this "little" upgrade isn't so little anymore.:O_o1:

Edit: just had a thought I could stick the PA120.2 that I currently have round on the side pannel like one of my friends is doing would that help at all.
