    Question PC spec check

Sorry if this is the billionth post on my new rig but im slowing making decisions and many of the older threads went slightly off topic

    PC Uses

    • Gaming
    • Music
    • MSN etc.

    Budget

    About £800 or so

    Spec

    CPU: Core 2 Duo E6570 - £129.24
    RAM: 2GB Corsair DDR2 PC6400 £83.39
    GPU: EVGA 8800GTS 320MB - £197.33
    MOBO: ASUS P5K Deluxe - £136.29
    PSU: Corsair 520W HX V2 - £64.50
    COOLING: Zalman CNPS9700 - £33.95
    OPTICAL DRIVE: Samsung SH183-L - £18.21
    CASE: Antec P182 - £80.95
    CASE COOLING: 2 x Scythe S-FLEX 120mm 1600RPM (For the front and middle of P182) - £25.83
    SOUND: Creative X-Fi Extreme 24Bit 7.1 OEM £27.60
    CABLE: 45cm Akasa SATA/SATAII - £2.29
    HDD1: Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM 320GB, SATA 200MBps, 16MB Cache - Already own
    HDD2: WD 7200RPM 160GB, SATA 150MBps, 16MB Cache - Already own
    HDD3: Seagate 7200RPM 80GB, IDE - Already own

    Total - £799.58

    Questions

CPU: Is it worth sacraficing something else for a Q6600? (i sometimes have a fair few programs running but not always and mainly use my pc for music, gaming and msn etc.)
RAM: Is it worthwhile getting PC7200 due to the E6750 multi being 8 (not 100%) so can only reach 3.2GHz CPU
    GPU:
MOBO: I have no clue about this one, is this what i need?
PSU: Will this be a sufficient wattage and will there be enough connectors etc. for everything
COOLING: Is there anything better?/Is this any good?
OPTICAL DRIVE: Is there anything better?/Is this any good?
CASE: Is there anything better?/Is this any good?
CASE COOLING: Are these needed? Is there anything better?/Is this any good?
SOUND: With the mobo having 7.1 is this needed in any possible way?
CABLE: Will the mobo come with SATAII cables (if so i can scrap this and buy a beer )

Just general advice would be much appreciated

    I will be overclocking

I've decided to go for the P5K deluxe, simply because it's had great write ups. One of which you'll find from respected member Clunk (search for it on here, definitly worth a read). The reason i'm going for it is that it offers exceptional overclocking potential.

I guess you should ask yourself, are you going to be overclocking? If you are then yeah stick with the P5K.

Secondly, the debate over an E6570 or a Q6600 is a tricky one. Im going for the Q6600 because I'm going to be doing a fair bit of Photoshop work (im a graphic designer/web dev) so it could utilise the extra cores i've been told. If its simply gaming then the E6570 should be a bit better for your needs. But match the quad core with the P5k and you'll get some impressive results that should leave the dual core standing after a good overclock.

To overclock you'll also need decent cooling, i'm not familiar with the Zalman but after lots of reading and research can recommend the Scythe Infinity, Tuniq Tower and Tt Ultra 120 (all for around £30-£35). These are top of the range air cooling parts so you'll be covered in that area. But if you do decide you're going to be overclocking, you'll need to look at watercooling to do so with stable results.

The RAM, i'd stick with 800Mhz stuff for your needs. I don't think you'll benefit from the faster stuff - but someone else should be able to advise you better hopefully on that one.

PSU - seems fine. Remember, never get the cheapest own brand stuff with a PSU!

Optical drive imo is an optical drive

The case, i've had the P182 as a front runner for my own system Im building next week and it looks an Excellent case both in design, and build quality. It's really got the system builder in mind.

Sound - not being much of an audiophile, I usually stick with my aging Soundblaster 5.1 Live or the onboard jobby - not sure of what kind of impact this has on general performance but I cant imagine much. Its all relative to the kind of speakers you have so I guess only you can know whether this is good enough/overkill.

The motherboard should come with the SATA cable so scrap the extra purcahse and buy me a beer

Just remember, take your time with it, read as much as you can so you're making as informed a decision as you can possibly make. After all it's your hard earned cash you'll be spending and you'll no doubt be using the computer for a year or so at least.

Cheers, the watercooling will be too much of a cost for me

I cant seem to find it anywhere but the cable is just to ensure i get SATAII as on of my HDD is SATAII

Then maybe look at a beefier cooler than the Zalman.
Also the sound card is a half height creative jobby & won't be quite as good as the more expensive full height cards. But that won't matter unless you're a serious audiophile
For what you're going to be doing the E6570 will be fine

*edit* The mobo will come with all necessary cables, so i personally wouldn't bother but it looks way cool, would look nice in my case
