    Maxtor HD

If you are a regular visitor of these forum's you'll have read the thread where i got a 250gb SATA HD when i RMA'ed my old 120GB drive to maxtor.

    http://forums.hexus.net/showthread.php?t=10138

Well..... The 250gb is making the same clunking noise now!! I put it down to heat at first since it was rather hot inside my tightly packed Shuttle. I removed the HD from the Shuttle and it's sat ontop of the DVD drive for the past day with an 80mm fan blowing onto it. The clunking noises appeared to go away... but i've just came in and my system was running like a dog. The HD was clunking! When i say clunking.... its as if the drive resets itself and boots itself back up. Once its settled down I can continue to do whatever i'm doing in windows.

The question is.... Should I RMA this drive back to Maxtor? Bear in mind it costs me £9-£10 ish each time i send a HD back to them which is taking the biscuit....

i RMAed a clunking harddrive back to ebugger and got a refund, which was nice, only £5 instead of lots of money sending it to ireland.. but i reckon its knackered, maybe you could ask them to say for the postage seeing as they sent you a duff drive?

Email... no thanks!!! I'll phone them Phone calls get dealt with... email's get shoved to the back of the queue and dealt with when they can be bothered.

The drive wont boot now. I guess i might as well wave good bye to my data. There goes 2 nearly finished hardware reviews, my mp3's, my documents - CV, covering letters, etc..... I hate Maxtor... I hate IBM!!!! I think ill start buying up all the 5400rpm HD's I can... at least they dont fail!

it runs 24 hours a day... 7 days a week... surely it should be able to cope with that sort of stress

It's not under full load all that time either... just ticking over...

    So damm annoying

I'll see what its like in my other PC in a minute

As was said earlier - phone them up and complain - repeated failures, time and inconvenience etc. and they should sort out postage.
I complained to IBM when my 2nd and 3rd deathstars failed and they sent DHL to pick them up, as well as replacing with larger drives

this is REALLY weird........ ive got a strange setup now... The HD is plugged onto my shuttle but powered from my main PC. its working!!!!!!!!!!!!

So my guess is a dodgy power lead or Shuttle PSU!!! I'm gonna try powering the drive using the SATA power lead on the Shuttle 220w PSU.

If that doesn't work then, im gonna start hounding Shuttle for a 250w PSU

    ------------

Look at the event logs from earlier when the drive was clicking

It'll be the PSU then, Maxtor's do require a steady power supply and take up more then most. I had the EXACT same issue with a crappy generic PSU, a new one solved it.
I even RMA'ed mine to Maxtor aswell, and found out later !

lol noway will they be ideal for 27/7 use ,unless u have a drive that is certified for 24/7 use then it probably wont like 24/7 useage definetly not with out a good steady voltage and good cooling

look at it this way even if the drive is faulty u got a £100 more expensive drive for free if u dont want to rma it sell it and let them do it ,ud still make more then u paid for ur original 120gb drive

    thats bad!!!
also if a drive starts making the nioses, they wont permenently go away, safest (for your data) to get the psu working proerly/get new psu, and get the drive replaced..
i had prblems with a broken psu cable that would turn on and off two maxtor drives, one broke quickly (it was new!!!) sent back and got a new one which ive hardly used at all. i copyed all my mp3's to it just so i could check it does acctually work, i play them from that now
