which PSU...

Hey guys,

I'm fed up of my PSU being the noisiest component in my system, and despite winning it free on hexus, i feel it needs replacing (ok, i could get 2x80mm fans and replace the ones inside there, but i want to be overkill here).

There seem to be two contestants in the £65 catagory:

520W Corsair HX V2 Series Modular PSU, ATX, EPS12V, whisper quiet, 5 year warranty : here

and

530w Tagan EasyCon - TG530-U15 - 2Force Silent Modular PSU : here

both of which are modular, and both of which should be quiet...

I prefer the modular-look of the Tagan (cables look nicer etc), and definately want to go for a modular PSU - my current one is modular but the cables are thick and bright orange, id rather thinner (ie easier to hide/route) and not-orange...

im tempted by the tagan, unless anyone can sway me to the corsair, or recommend a different PSU entirely? I'm thinking £65ish max, and 500W ish (my current one is 500w), and dead quiet

what do you guys recommend

Just had a look on JohnnyGuru and the Corsair looks like the one to go for:

- Tagan EasyCon 530W ~ 6.5 out of 10

- Corsair HX520W 520W ~ 9 out of 10

coolio, just done a 'psu calculator' majigger and it comes to 518W heh, dunno if its worth going for the 620W model instead...

They do say that it is only there as a guideline on the website and it is always nice t have a decent amount of headroom. You dont wanna start up a game only for everything to shut down cuz there isnt enough power.

I would have said if the online calculator says its over 500w then go for 550 - 600w just to be safe... unless you wanna get some electrical equipment and test every single item to see how much power it requires

Yep they are pretty bad. I just tried the one on extreme.outervision.com for a laugh and it says my recommended wattage is 520W.

I've tested my system with a plug in power meter which will also take into account the PSU inefficiencies and it uses about 180w max. (C2D E4300@3.1GHz, 7600GT, 2 SATA drives, 2 DVD Writers)

Another vote for the Corsair, and the 520W will be plenty for your system. Corsair tend to under-rate their PSU's slightly, whereas some of the other manufacturers over-rate theirs.

streetster, I'm running a system very similar to yours off of a Seasonic S12 430W without a hitch. As stated above, the 520W Corsair will be more than enough.

My rig:

KN8-SLI; Opteron 146 @ 2400; 2Gb RAM; 7900GT; 1 x 200Gb Samsung HD & 1 x DVD-RW.

Heck, look at the rig in my sig, running off a 4 year old 420W Tagan.

At idle my system uses just 96 Watts to my utter amazement. Under 100% CPU/GPU load it uses just 130 watts again to my utter amazement - I have a 520Watt Cosair and the PSU calculator told me I needed a 600 watt PSU - As graphically illustrated here they are crap.

I think PSU calculators must get payoffs from the PSU firms. There's no way they can get it so horribly wrong consistently.

Im curious to know... when GPU firms state that cards need minimun of like 200-300w... do you reckon this is seriously overrating it?
