E6850 vs Q6600

So, they are both about the same price now at £170 - But for a gaming and general use PC, which is the smarter buy?

Hard choice tbh. On the one hand you have two extra CPUs in the q6600 but then your lacking a 1333mhz FSB. After typing this I personally and for my needs and wants would choose the q6600 others may well disagree however. The Q6600 is certainly much better value because you are getting two extra CPUs and the Q6600 will easily clock to the speed of an E6850.

The Q6600 is gonna be more "future proof" and when new games (hopefully Bioshock, UT3, Crysis etc) are written to utilise the extra cores then it's gonna whip an E6850 even when it is clocked a fair bit lower. The Q6600 should however overclock very well as Dorza said. But if you want the fastest out of box performance for current games then the E6850 is the way to go.

E6750 seems a good price too, thinking hard about ordering one, ebuyer are doing them for £118 and can get supersaver delivery on it too.
