    I'm not sure how a metal heatspreader would protect against static, isnt it more likely to be the thermal pad that does that?

    Well the package for the ram chips themselves is a plastic composite, with the metal spreader sitting on them (thermal pad or no) it leaves less a risk of someone touching a circuit that runs into the chips themselves I guess.
