press start button then run, type into the run box

when it pops up the command window type the following replacing X with the drive letter in question

chkdsk X: /r (press enter again)

it may ask to do it on reboot, thats fine, let it run and see if all the data is back. may take a couple of hours.

Is the drive still spinning up and showing in windows and the BIOS? If so, I would try some recovery software, theres tons on the net. I havent used any, so maybe someone can reccomend one?

i did, its always a good start to try the makers CD as that often has file recovery tools that work better than chkdsk ever will, yes it must be spinning up and detected as it tried a chkdsk.

i dare say if the makers one fails we can try some of the freeware stuff.
