Power Supply

Hi people I'm hoping you can help and I don't need to be on a specific quiet pc forum. My current PC spec is as below and I'm looking to upgrade very soon but I'd like to do as much as I can before I change mobo cpu gfx card and ram. So my next (just changed optical drives) change is the power supply. Bearing in mind my next pc is going to be a HTPC (rough spec hopefully a dual core 6600 and geforce 8800 card) i want as quiet a supply as possible. I'm sure I've seen some which only have the fan running when the PSU gets to a certain temperature which would be quite good.

I'm not all that bothered about cost (under £120 would be great) but I do obviously want a good quality power supply that is as quiet as possible.

For your upgrade system then a Corsair 520w for about £66 will do.

For around £100 pounds the Enermax Infiniti Range is THE BEST around at the moment.

The Corsair 520W is ok if you want to go cheap. (Just avoid the 620W).

Why is this, out of interest? Don't know much about PSUs, but they seem to provide similar amps and have similar efficiency.....

£100 PSU to power "dual core 6600 and geforce 8800 card" - Talk about an overkill.
There is absolutely no need what-so-ever to spend that kinda money on a PSU for a system like that.

Totally agree, that 520W Cosair PSU would have more than enough power for that system and is supposed to be very quiet.

The original poster said he would want to spend up to £120, thats why.
The Infiniti is still less than that.

1) The Corsairs arent as quiet as people make out. The Infiniti, even at full throttle is whisper quiet.
2) The Corsair RMA procedure is INCREDIBLY POOR for anyone in UK/Europe. Enermax has an EXCELLENT UK based RAM system.
3) The modular connections on the Corsair arent very strong and when spending that kind of dosh they should be. (Unfortunatley the best connectors are on the Hipers. Shame the PSU is so flaky).

On a last note, im suprised that punters seem to put so much emphasis on the 5year warranty on the Corsairs.
Be honest.........how many of us keep the same PSU for more than 18 months, let alone 5 years.

Thanks for the info. Personally I'd still rather have the 5 year warranty, could help with selling it on, but was unaware about the RMA procedure being bad.... pretty poor from a major company, especially when they charge over the odds for their ram

Just to give you a better idea I'm considering this case http://www.quietpc.com/gb-en-gbp/pro...assic-caseonly which would allow for passive cooling on everything. Therefore the only noises I'd get would be from the hard drives spinning up (2 x 10k raptors) and the PSU. So ideally I'd like a PSU that doesn't even have a fan so long as it can take being in a PC without any airflow.

The noise of the Raptors should drown out a quiet psu. Secondly, I believe even a fanless psu needs some airflow.

Well my ideas are now totally shot. A quick email to Kustom PC's has revieled the above case I intended to use won't accept a GFX card as big as the 8800 and having two raptors plus a DVD writer is going to create too much heat to be fanless. Therefore having any fans in my book kind of negates the requirements of a fanless case. They recommend the Nvidia 8600 and a single hard drive along with a 300W passive silverstone PSU.

I'm not sure this is going to fulfil my needs as I'd like to get back into gaming now that I've finished uni.
