New build problems

First time I switched it on I got a continuous ear-piercing beep that didn't stop. Checked inside and plugged in the 4-pin power socket marked PCI-E. After that it started so I assumed that was the problem, went into the BIOS and made a few changes to the SATA/IDE and integrated peripherals, didn't touch the overclocking options. Rebooted, and it didn't come back. Got four short beeps, all the fans and drives spun up but nothing on my monitor, then it started rebooting by itself. It would power up for a short while then reboot, just kept going like that until I pulled the power cable. I tried unplugging everything and only connected a single drive and the necessary power cables, but I'm now back to the continuous beeping. What the heck is going on?

Look up the mobo manual what the four short beeps stand for.

Doesn't the GTX require 2 x 6pin PCI-E power?

Try running 1 or 2 sticks of RAM

Yes, both of those are connected.

Pulled one RAM module and it started up without the continuous beeping, I got a progress message about the RAID/AHCI, then a corrupted display. Rebooted, got three sets of two short beeps, then nothing. Rebooted again and I got a corrupted POST display.

If you can get to the bios have you checked the temps?

The one time I got there it reported 31c for the CPU.

I would say take everything out try building again with the bare minimum componants ensuring eveything is seated correctly.

it sounds like a dodgy graphics card or maybe even the bios. Any way you can pictures of the image you are getting n the display?

If it comes up again I'll snap a pic. It's random though, sometimes it starts sometimes it just reboots endlessly, or does nothing. I have another graphics card so I'll try swapping that out as well.

Could a motherboard short be responsible?


Word of warning for anyone considering a Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme with a P35-DQ6 motherboard - it doesn't fit very well. The heat pipes on the cooler hit the copper fins of the motherboard and push the cooler slight off-centre.

Try clearing the cmos & liek i said earlier taking everything out and carefully re-doing it. Many a time i have had a problm and this has sorted it out. Usually down to a componant not quite seated correncly.

Yeah, I'll try clearing the CMOS first. Not at a home right now but will give it a go this evening. It does seem a bit flaky about starting up so perhaps that's the problem.

I'm getting this horrible sinking feeling that it's the graphics card that's at fault, though, what with the graphical corruption. Damnit.

Not to worry if it is, if its all new stuff then its just a case of sending it back. Pain in the arse but these things happen

It has happened to me before with an AGP 9800 Pro

1 Long, 2 Short Video adapter failure Bad video adapter from award bios beep errors.

I assume you have reseated etc clean the contacts. Let us know what happens with the spare card.

Cleared CMOS, nothing changed. Tried a different graphics card, no different. I think the motherboard is faulty, gonna return it.

Yeah from my end thats how it looks. I recently had to do the same thing and it was a nerveracking experience, thought they where gunna say... what you talking about its fine

So, what's a good mobo? I'm leaning toward the Abit IP35 since I've had plenty of luck with Abit in the past. Anyone got this board? Opinions?
