Video Capture Card

I've given up trying to use Sony's propriatory software to capture video from it's MicroMV range, it's time I just got a video capture card and be done with it....

Could someone point me in the right direction? Nothing more than £100 unless absolutely essential....the tape quality isn't particularly great in the first place, so I doubt it's going to matter a whole lot.

Internal or external?

Basic software based capture cards can be had for not much more than 20 quid.

Hauppauge PVR cards have hardware MPEG-2 capure which can be useful, but might not be required for what you need to do.

Does MicroMV not transfer video feeds over firewire? ytou could just use that for capture, as long as it is standard firewire (IEEE1394) then there are hundreds of apps that can control and capturethe video from that, you don't need to use the Sony software.

You can get USB devices that can do the job you want... They cost about £30.

Any chance of some names on any of the apps for capturing over firewire? I've used MovieShaker, and Pinnacle's Studio and they're both terrible. The reason I'd like a capture card is because once it's plugged in and playing, I know I've got a video stream being captured....Studio was terrible for failing utterly to register there was anything plugged in, and it'd put scenes throughout the whole capture, regardless of content, which made it a bugger to edit...

You could even try Windows MovieMaker, it has firewire capture.

not brilliant, but i've used it a couple of times for quick captures to DVD

WinDV doesn't want to play ball...it registers the input, but won't capture because 'Error: Can't find DV output pin'

MovieMaker doesn't even see the camcorder....it did, just once, then crashed. I haven't been able to replicate that event. Imagine that, wanting a piece of MS software to crash.

Does that capture the raw video stream, or is it going to cause problems 'cause MicroMV records native MPEG2?
