system starts, then stops almost straight away!

    Hi.

ive purchased a q6600 and a gigabyte GA-n650 sli motherboard, along with 2gb oz ram.

sometimes the PC with start ok, sometimes it spins up, then shuts down.It did hang during bootup on the bios screen whilst tring to seek drives, but doesnt appear to be doing that now.
The power supply is an Enermax 535w with 34A total 12v.

    i have only 1 hard drive, 1dvdrw, a creative audigy and a 1x 7900gt,2 standard fans, 1 usb mouse, i ps2 keyboard.

Once booted the voltage on the 12v is 12.42v, lowest it goes to is 12.36v

Im trying to sort out weather its the PSU or the new motherboard, ram or CPU.
I would have thought the 535w would have been enough ( as i tried a x300 in there and the problems i had didnt go away)

ive run it with the absolute bare minimum ( motherboard ,cpu,ram,x300) and still the problems persisted.

before throwing £100+ on it with a psu, is there anything im missing?

    many thanks
    steve

Could you try the PSU with your old motherboard, cpu and RAM? If it still works with your old stuff then I'd say motherboard

no, unable to do that. The boards PCIe 16x was not working.I have stripped the cpu and ram of it , and thrown the board

Do you have a friend who has a PC you could try the PSU on?

The power supply is an Enermax 535w with 34A total 12v.
That would be enough (unless the PSU is actually faulty.

You sure its all connected right?

Re: system starts, then stops almost straight away!

ive restarted numerous times now, and i cant make it repeat any fault.

i am now using the reset button as the on button incase that was defective. The case is a thermaltake Tsunami dream (horrible case i know), and it has 2 blue LEDs in the door, ive disconected those too.

I cant use the PSU on another rig as my friend went on holiday yesterday for 2 weeks. To top it all , he has a 600w enermax noisekiller sitting in his loft.
i have a second 7900gt, but until i can resolve this issue im leaving that out.

i dont overclock anything,i run everything stock.

Sounds like a ram compatibility issue

Re: system starts, then stops almost straight away!

Worth running Memtest to check. Also worth going down to 1Gb and swapping to see if one stick is bad. See one of the other current threads about the need to match the voltage to what your RAM wants.

Re: system starts, then stops almost straight away!

ocz are known to have compatability issues using default settings on their ram. advice is usually to put 1 stick of the ram in slot 1, boot, and manually set the timings to what you want. However, sounds more like a mobo/power related problem to me as the stage of boot you are reaching varies. Still, if the ram timings are only slightly too tight, then that could also explain the issue. Try it, and if no solution, find a way to test psu/mobo.

Re: system starts, then stops almost straight away!

Im a bit of a novice with timings etc, and tend to run everything as auto.

in the pc health it states ddr2 voltage 1.8v OK.

yet the ram states its 2.1v ?

i did set the FSB clock mode to unlinked with the cpu host at 266.7 (auto) but manually entererd 1066 in the memory frequency.

system voltage control to auto ( as thats the only way i can seem to optimise system voltage ) once the value has been changed from the defualt 800mhz.

i have now set it to linked and 1.1, but still had to set to auto to optimise voltage

The ram is the ocz sli stuff pc8500 so i guessed it should be ok with the sli board.

i have run memtest, and had no probs.I will leave all as is now , and see if it does it to me again.

Re: system starts, then stops almost straight away!

You need to increase the DDR voltage in the BIOS to 2.1V.

Re: system starts, then stops almost straight away!

    Hi.
Tried every option in the bios to increase the voltage, but nothing works.Once you select auto to optimise system voltage it locks the other options.Select manual, and increase the voltage by 0.3v and it wont boot into windows properly.( also gives a red warning saying system not optimised)

I loaded up easytune and did in via that, and it seems stable ...so far.

Thanks for the help, i would have thought the OCZ ram would have been ok as it has profiles that i thought would have meant this would not have happened.

Looks like they deliberately knackered the BIOS to stop people OC'ing a "value" board. Good that you found a solution.
