GFX Card for SK41G Media Centre

Hi guys, I could really do with some suggestions for a gfx card for my SK41G that I have won on Ebay. I am going to be using it as a media centre. It will not be used as a PVR as I do not have cable. I intend to play Divx files on it, MP3’s, net radio via wi fi. The specs are 512MB Ram, 120Gb HDD and a XP2200 CPU.

What screen are you outputting to? If it's just a normal TV and you're going to be going standard definition stuff then an old GF4 card would be fine (I had a GF4 MX440 with composite video out). If you're thinking of going high definition then something with more grunt will be helpful. Maybe something in the 7300/7600 region would be best. Any budget constraints?

It will be going to a 32" LCD TV with a VGA and HDMI input. I do not intend to do much in the way of high def and I am trying to keep the costs down, its amazing that my wife has agreed to it this far.

Re: GFX Card for SK41G Media Centre

I'm sure it would do the job, but I would want something a little newer than that. At the old end of product life end of the market there are quite a few cards kicking around now. Example:

this 6200 card has S-video, DVI and VGA outputs as well as being fanless. The 5200 cards seem to have good video scaling hardware too.

Not convinced of the wisdom of having a TV tuner built into a VGA card either, I want to upgrade the 2 independently.

Re: GFX Card for SK41G Media Centre

Although you don't have cable you could still get an analog tuner, possible dual and then be able to record one channael whilst recording another.

Use a 9800pro in my media centre and would'nt really recommend spending a lot of money for a gfx card just for a media pc.

Re: GFX Card for SK41G Media Centre

i dont actually need to record anything off the tv as i dont have cable. All i need is something better than the onboard gfx.
