    New PC system

    Hi guys,

I'm looking to upgrade my present system of Asus p5b mobo, 3.0 P4 & 6800GX GPU and would like a few pointers.

I'm looking at going for the EVGA 680i SLI Mobo, 4 GB of RAM, Core 2 Duo 3.0 CPU, 700W OCZ GameXstream PSU and an undecided as yet 88oo GTX graphics card. I'm happy to retain present optical drives, HDD and also add in a couple of 500GB in RAID.

    My budget is circa 1K.

    Comments please...

    - I second what shaithis said, you really want a P35 motherboard, screw SLi it's just not worth it.

    - For 4GB RAM you'll really need to be running 64bit Vista.

    - 700W is WAY overkill for anything other than an overclocked, watercooled quad-core running two graphics cards.

The main question to ask is will you be overclocking?

May look at overclocking in the future, but was planning on running 1 x 8800 GTX and then upgrading to 2x, hence the larger PSU.

Any suggestions to help keep the rig as quiet as possible?

Stick with one card, a single GTX is more than ample.
Plus this way you don't have to spend silly money on a PSU, with £1000 I'd get:

    - Intel Core 2 Duo E6850 ~ £168.95

    - Scythe Miné ~ £24.17

    - Asus P5K-E/WIFI-AP ~ £105.03

    - 2GB OCZ Platinum PC2-6400 4-4-4-15 x 2 ~ £150.84

    - 500GB Samsung HD501LJ x 2 ~ £124.52

    - 768MB BFG Technology 8800GTX OC ~ £357.19

    - 520W Corsair HX ~ £64.50

    - Samsung SH-S203/BEBN ~ £18.20

    Total ~ £1,013.40

Thanks for the replies. TBH, as it will be mainly a gaming rig, I was veering towards splurging out on the GTX now whilst I have the cash, and I'm not sure how long it will be til I can convince the Missus spending another £300+ on the lastest GPU is a good idea. Hence my thinking of adding another 8800GTX when the new wave of kit comes out and prices start to drop.

Also, with regard to the mobo, on the Scan site it states that fitting a GTX or ULTRA prevents full use of some ports on the board due to the layout.

The board comes with angled connectors. Will be a little more awkward but dont worry will still be able to access all ports

I "upgraded" my case to a nice led one last year, which tbh is as noisy as hell, so I will give that and most of the innards to the kids and take back my old Coolermaster Praetorian case from them.

nightshadows spec looks good but rather than go for a dual core for £170 i would be looking at the quad core cpu, otherwise in sixth months time you will wish you had gone for the quad. The Q6600 can be had for about £170.

Also the Asus mobos are good but as an alternative the Gigabyte P35C-DS3R, P35-DS4 and P35-DQ6 are also very good mobos.

From NightshadowUK's spec, I would switch to a E6750 and drop down to a 320MB 8800GTS. I don't know what size screen you have but this should be fine for most. In 6-8 months time (or maybe longer if you wish), you can always sell these off and grab a penryn processor and a 9800 based video card. If rumours are true, the 9800GTX is supposed to be twice the speed of the 8800GTX and even two 8800GTX's in SLI will not match that. £357.19 + whatever the second card will cost X months down the line, just doesn't seem worth it.
