Penryn preview / benchmarks

A site demonstrating the power of Penryn. They seem to have a Wolfdale processor clocked at 2.33Ghz and are comparing it’s performance to a Conroe Processor – the E6550.

In games it’s up to ~31% faster clock for clock and power consumption / temperatures are down to 59W / 37C under load (compared to 83W / 49C for the Conroe chip).

Sounds promising.

It's in Cantonese. A current UTF-8 capable operating system (Vista or Linux) will render the fonts properly with a compatible browser.

But that looks like seriously good results, good on Intel.

Nice. Extra cache helps the games and better SSE helps the more synthetic stuff and renders.

Not enough improvement for me to jump ship though. Bring on Nehalem

I don't think it'll take the crown. But it'll reduce the gap significantly, which is the most important thing.

Closing the gap would help a lot, if AMD keep up like this they'll end up going bust. And that would be a really bad thing.

Not really. If they go bust, someone will buy them. Probably Samsung.

I'd have thought it would more likely be IBM/Toshiba/Sony

But this is speculating a bit far me thinks

I think AMD will get the crown again but not for another year or more.

I was going to get a G0 quad once scan got them in but seeing these results I may wait for a Penryn quad instead

Why would Samsung buy AMD and how would that put Intel in deep dodo?

Samsung are Intel's largest competitor and the one they are most afraid of. They also Dwarf intel in size adn compete in many of teh same lines of business.
There may be an impression that AMD are intel's biggest threat amonsgt computer forums, but the reality is that AMD compete with them in only one area of their business and are considered small fry by them.
IMO Samsung will be interested in buying AMD if they go into administration to open more markets for themselves and gain access to the technology and staff.
