    Power Supply?

I've just read a review on the OCZ EvoStream and it looks pretty awesome..

Was wondering if there were any other PSU's alike it..

The main features that i like are the UV cable ties and the fact that it's modular,

I've been looking but finding it difficult to find any that are similar, the Aspire Chameleon looked cool but isn't modular and i was really after a modular PSU..

    The system specification is:

    Asus P5K-E/WIFI-AP, iP35
    C2Q Q6600
    2GB OCZ PC2-6400 Dual Channel
    Nvidia 8800 GTS
    3x 160GB SATAII HDD (Raid)

That's all packed in a Antec Nine Hundred..

I haven't actually decided on what RAID configuration to use, i always get bloody confused with all the numbers and all, i might up the drives to 4 since i think that Raid 0+1 needs 4 drives minnimum.. I think i'm right in saying that RAID 0+1 is the one with the striping and mirroring?? Could be wrong lol

Any help regarding RAID suggestions and the PSU would be greatly appreciated,

    Thanks,
    Iain.

    Re: Power Supply?

i ended up with the EvoStream 720 and am impressed with it, only real minor point is the 24pin cable is quite stiff out of the box as it's wire braided and then a rubber sleeve so a little bendy wendy and a hair dryer will sort that out.

it's packed into a top mounted bay on my case at the mo, so don't know how it will fare in an antec case with the psu being bottom mounted.

    Re: Power Supply?

For your spec I would say some thing like a Seasonic M12 600, M being the modular part

or some thing like this Enermax Liberty 620w modular, it all depend on how much you want to spend on a PSU ?

    Re: Power Supply?

The corsair psus are very good...ive got both the HX520W and the HX620W in seperate machines and they are very good and very quiet. And they are modular.

    Re: Power Supply?

PSUs: Corsair, Seasonic, OCZ EvoStream, Enermax.
These are quiet and powerfull PSUs and should do the job fine. I'd also recommend OCZ GameXtreme/StealthXtreme or FSP Epsilon series, but the fan used in those (all based on one model made by FSP/Fortron) may be/become noise (had to change it in my FSP Epsilon since ball bearings were making loud noise). tagan also is very good PSU, but does not fall under quiet criteria (depends on the model).

For the RAID make sure that you buy mobo with R suffix insuring RAID functionality built-in chipset, not the one provided by JMicron controller since it allows raiding one internal and one external (via eSATA) HDD only. But for 4 drives I'd recommend buying a proper add-on controller like Areca. Anyway making RAID0 (for speed) with two drives on chipsets controller and adding another HDD(s) just for storage should be fast and easy for most home PC users

The StealthStream is a budget OCZ PSU and the reviews its getting arent too clever. I have to admit, i have never seen one up close though.
As far as the Fortrons are concerned, its not just the Epsilons that are good. THe Bluestorms are excellent aswell.

(FYI the Epsilons are IDENTICAL to the Gamestreams inside the box. They are made in the same factory and just badged accordingly)

Any help regarding RAID suggestions and the PSU would be greatly appreciated,
RAID 0+1 would be ideal for you. Both for speed and data protection.
As far as the PSU is concerend, you have bought some very good components there.
If you want to go for a PSU that will last for a few upgrades then this is the only as its THE BEST around at the moment:
    650W - http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=567861
    720W - http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=539645

    Overkill........well at the moment probably.
Expensive......Yes but still better value than any other 600W unit (including the overpriced Corsair 620W)
Would you be pleased you bought one of these ........ Absolutely no doubt in my mind.
