new PC shuts down every few mins
HI
I have just build a brand new PC with following specs:
- MSI P6N Diamond nVidia 680I Socket 775 DDR2 16x SLI SATA II Raid
- INTEL CORE 2 QUAD Q6600 2.40GHZ 8Mb 1066FSB
- CT2KIT25664AA667 4GB kit (2GBx2), 240-pin DIMM (i know i won't see more that 3 GB in vista 32)
- BFG GeForce 8800 GTX OC 768MB
- BFG 800W UK/PFC Approved PSU
- Thermaltake PC Case Tsunami VA3000BWA Black Aluminium
and it works (sort of). I am now having few issues.
- It shuts down after few min. In the BIOS the CUP temp rise to 93 C and bang...... all the cores have 50+ reading in Speed fan.
- HDD light doesn't work.
I am not planning to overclock. I am using the original INTEL fan and i guess it's not working, I need some advise on how to get the temp down.
Any help will be appriciated.
Thanks
SC
Re: new PC shuts down every few mins
Hey welcome to the forums. It would seem pretty obvious to replace the fans before you do some serious damage to your cpu!! Buy a new HSF is what I think.

Ouch, 93 is hot!
Buy something like the Scythe Ninja. For now re-seat the stock heatsink :)
Re: new PC shuts down every few mins
Sounds like your heatsink isn't properly seated. That would be my first port of call anyway, also make sure your haven't put too much thermal paste on it either.
Re: new PC shuts down every few mins
Something is drastically wrong. I would start to look at the system to see if you have missed anything. The stock intel heatsink and fan should cool the cpu properly without any modification.
I would look at reseating the heatsink and and as you do look for the following;
Was there thermal paste on the bottom of the heatsink when you attached it to the cpu/motherboard? Thermal paste should cover the cpu but be thin. (heatsinks usually have a bit of paste on the bottom that has a removable plastic tab.)
Have you checked to make sure that your heatsink is seated properly. It should clamp down.
Does the CPU heatsink fan spin up on power up?
(Can anyone confirm if it is possible to mount the heatsink round the wrong way.)
The HDD light on the case is usually due to incorrect wiring of the front panel of your case to your motherboard. Consult your case and motherboard manual and you should be able to sort it. We've all had this issue when building PCs and it's minor, but annoying. (plus damn fiddly if you have bananas for fingers like me!)
Re: new PC shuts down every few mins
Nicely put iranu.
As an add on the push pins can be pretty nerve racking to correctly apply. Often people are nervous of applying to much pressure on the pin, dont be. You need a fair amount to lock the pin through.
To check that it is properly seated once you have reseated the cooler, turn the mobo over whilst supporting the heatsink and look for the pins that should be latched onto the base of the board.
Make suer once you are satisfied that the cpu is properly seated lock the pins into place, see cpu manual.
Personally I hate the push pin method, and whilst the screw in method with a backplate can be fiddly at least it is well supported and more secure.
Having invested that amount of money on the rest of the components £20 to £35 on a decent cooler is an inexpensive investment.
Even if you are not planning on overclocking I would still consider a third party cooler

1. Strip down and completely rebuild. Make sure you take a careful look at the Heatsink and CPU whilst doing so. Are you sure you connected the fan for the Heatsink (not taking the pee....just suprising how easy it is to forget it).
2. You haven't plugged the HD cable onto the mobo header or you have the orientation of the cable on the header wrong.
Re: new PC shuts down every few mins
hi
wow :surprised: i wasn't expecting quick response but thanks everyone.
As suggested
I have reseatted the fan and in BIOS temp is hovering around 32c for last 15 mins. There was no thermal paste in the box but some was already on the fan and it has been applied to the CPU.
I don't think if there is a wrong way but as first time sys builder i could be completely wrong.
i am quiet happy to get some 3rd party cooler as i am planning to use this sys for next 4-5 years.
I think with HDD led i have mixed the ground and live wire. does it have any effect on mobo or hdd light doesn't work?
suggestions are welcome.
Thanks again guys for the help.

Re: new PC shuts down every few mins
Changing the HDD LED jumper around should work. If not then the case light has probably gone. I've had cases before where one of the LEDs didn't work.
If the CPU is now showing 32C in BIOS then it should be OK now. Is it still shutting down?
Presumably the HSF had a thermal pad rather than paste. These aren't as good but there shouldn't be a problem with no OC.
Re: new PC shuts down every few mins
It seems to be working ok, no shut down so far.
HDD led connector swapped and it works fine.
SpeedFan readings:
Temp1: 23C
Temp2: 35C
Temp3: -128C
Core0: 30C
Core1: 30C
Core2: 23C
Core3: 25C
Fan1: 1882 RPM
Fan2: 1458 RPM
Fan3: 8287 RPM
Fan4 : 0 RMP (don't know y, as the fourth fan is also running)
8800 GTX is running bit hot.
Temp: 61C
CPU clock: 480 MHz
Mem Clock: 720 MHz

Re: new PC shuts down every few mins
GPU temp is perfectly good for the 8800GTX mine runs at 59 deg, so no sweat.
Add another 10+ degs to your speedfan temps. Its taking it from the mobo bios. Instead download Coretemp this will give a more accurate figure.
Re: new PC shuts down every few mins
Whoa! better tie the pc down, it might take off!
Re: new PC shuts down every few mins
Ditto what DratUK said.
I too can confirm the 8800GTX temperature is fine. And yes, download Coretemp if possible, for an accurate reading.
Re: new PC shuts down every few mins
guys
thanks for all the info; :)
Core Temp readings:
TJun: 100c
core0: 48c
core1: 49c
core2: 43c
core3: 46c
so it think it is looking good.
now a stupid, off the topic, q would i be able to run vista 64 with above setup or i am stuck with 32 until i change mobo and cpu.

Glad it worked out OK.
Remember...when connecting wires to headers there is a +/- on the header AND wire. The mobo shows these (or the manual) and on the wire the little down arrow shows the + side.
The GTX is fine btw......in fact....thats quite cool for a GPU. I had a 9800XT once that idled @ over 70 :D

If your not going OC they are fine.
Yep no problem with 64 bit with that system. You'd be better off anyway running 64 bit with the 4Gb ram.
