the AMD Overclocking guides that helped YOU.

ive got my amd 3800+ sitting at stock and really want a bit more grunt tbh, and seeing as most of you all have jumped to the core2, i was just wondering what guides that have helped you overclock your AMD chip (were talking X2/single core) when you didnt kno anything about AMD overclocking...

i used to have a intel p4 and that was much easier to do with the FSB but AMD overclocking is a whole differnt kettle of fish tbh.....so what help and or guides can you share with me ?

These are from my old favourites folder. I don't know if you find them usuful but here you go. But to be honest what helped me most was my own trial and error experiences. Guide surely helped me to some extent but overclocking method is slightly different from board to board so you got to try it out for yourself and learn what you should do and shouldn't do by yourself, ultimately. You seem to have very good memory and PSU so I think you can pull out some quite decent results from that 3500+. Goodluck.

Drop the memory divider to 166, htt multi to 3x and start upping the bus speed, that will get you started

Re: the AMD Overclocking guides that helped YOU.

First...in BIOS find the memory settings and you'll prolly find they're at 333 (which may show as 166 DDR cos that IS 333) You have PC3200 which is 400 speed, so it might be at that already.

Drop the memory down to the next lowest.

Reboot....the PC will still be a 3800 cos you've just divided the bus between the ram and the memory.

These A64 CPU's are not particularly bothered by slower ram speeds so you'll not find it much slower.

Next, reboot and find the HTT which will be at 5x as standard. Knock it down to 3x, and we can move it back up later if we can. Once again, the CPU wont be unduly effected.

    Reboot and see.

Then back into BIOS and find the FSB which will be showing as 200. Your CPU clock speed it made up of a multiplier (locked on your CPU) and that FSB.

If you move the 200 up to 220, you've gone up 10%. When you reboot the CPU will be 10% faster. What you must do is always remember the RAM has gone up by the same 10%. Personally I'd go straight for a 20% overclcok which is 240 fsb.

So, if you're ram is DDR400 (which I think it is from your PC spec) and you drop it to 333, the MOST you can overclock is 20%

Because 20% of 333 is 66.6 anf that brings your ram back up to 400, where it is designed to max out.

You are looking for the highest CPU speed, NOT the highest ram speed as these chips thrive on CPU clock speed and not on bandwidth.

So in the case above, you drop your ram to 333, knock the FSB up from 200 to 240, and whatever your multiplier is (I think it's a 10x on that chip) gives you a 2.4 per core.

My 3800 ran at that 24/7 no effort. That made it a 4800 in all but cache size (it had half the cache of a real 4800)

    Back to the HTT.

These are designed to chuck data across the cpu really fast. Default is 5x the FSB which is 200 =1000

SOme cpu's go above that, but it's best to drop the 5x to 3x to start with and then go back up to 4x if its stable.

4x240 is 960 so actually safely in limits.

If you wanna go further, you drop the ram to 266, and up the 240 a bit at a time

Try it all on default volts...I'll bet that chip, will go well on default volts.

Re: the AMD Overclocking guides that helped YOU.

You may need to turn off cool n quiet.. depends on the motherboard and so on, but on my asrock for instance having CnQ on drops the default voltage by about 0.5v anyway, regardless of setting, limiting my everyday overclock to 15% with tight timings (I want to keep CnQ on for energy savings).

Re: the AMD Overclocking guides that helped YOU.

Only guides that ever helped me were steping lists, so I had a rough guess as to what a cpu should do.

The overclocking itself is not at all difficult once you have a grasp of the true relationships of the various clocks and have a rought understanding of memory timings and sub-timings.

In the end, nothing (besides hands-on experience/trial and error) helped me more than AMD tech docs, and the articles by arstechnica and cpuid on K8 architecture. If you know hat stu ff, you know more than 85% of the people who wrote most of these "overclocking guides".

thanks for the guides, gonna have a read of em tonight, and thanks zak running @ 2.6Ghz hehe, just to make sure everything is OK, the ht link is @ 800mhz, bus is 260 (went from 240 like you said) and memory seems to be running @ 216Mhz
