19' Monitor just died -> Need new 19' monitor

Woke up this morning, Viewsonic 19' monitor's dead (power lights gone). Tracked down who we got it off (ebuyer) and, by the skin of my teeth, am just within the 12 month warranty period. They no longer stock my model (VX924) so that means I get a refund of £172 (ish)

Neeeeed new 19' TFT monitor pronto! I'm using an old taxan goldfish bowl monitor and doubt I'll survive long with it.

Any recommendations for a decent home 19' TFT monitor in the £170 - £190 range, sharp pic, good colour, used for gaming and photoshop / light 3D work etc.

Thanks again.

I'd be interested in other people's opinions as well. I've always been a fan of Iiyama with their 3yr on-site warranty. I've had to replace quite a few displays over time and feel 3yrs warranty makes a difference. However Iiyama are perhaps not the best choice now and would consider others, including Viewsonic, Philips, Dell and Samsung

Out of interest why another 19"? Most people now seem to be choosing a widescreen display in preference.

If I remember rightly the Viewsonic manufacturer warranty is a 3 year warranty, it's Ebuyer who have a 12 month returns policy - again from memory, I haven't had chance to check the fine print yet, but that's what the girl told me an hour ago.

I probably would like the wide screen options, but there's a little bit of stick in the mud in it, cotswoldcs, and I've got used to a 19' monitor, and the deciding factor is space. Without wishing to embark on a domestic revamp the monitor goes into a specific 45 cm width slot very neatly and very out of the way-ly.

Although must admit to just going off the numbers and this review http://reviews.cnet.co.uk/monitors/0...9287640,00.htm

Looks nice and is suposed to have great picture quality, warranty is quoted as 3years on other sites.
Drawbacks, No OSD all adjustments have to be done through software and DVI only, no d-sub or RCA (can be connected via d-sub but you need an adaptor)

Sometime in the last couple of months there was a similar thread which included some technical details about different technologies (it referred to a DELL monitor compared with something else. Might be worth doing a search for it.

Try this http://forums.hexus.net/showthread.php?t=113125

(there are many other 'Which monitor threads' too!

On a more useful note I've seen a few of the glossier (glass fronted?) TFTs recently and though the glare is worse the colour range seems better (deeper colours especially - blacker blacks)

Viewsonic give a 2 year warranty with the VX series, 3 year is with the VP, VA, VG series.

Very interesting find, Pob255, thanks, those drawbacks are drawbacks ..I think, weighing it up now. Although I've just spotted a Samsung SyncMaster 970P for a good price, over what I wanted to pay, but a good price. Seems to get sound reviews.

yeah, waded through a few and most leaned in favour of larger screens, perfectly understandable though. Just wondered if anyone had direct contact with a cool new 19' they just purchased, or favourite long standing model.

I've had a Samsung SynMaster 931BW 19" widescreen for about 4 months now, brilliant monitor, bright display, fast response time of 2ms and it looks great . I've used it gaming and for some photoshop work and it's superb for both, especially photoshop because of the widesreen you can fit more onto the screen (obviously) .

can't link to it but ebuyer sell it (although currently out of stock) for £164.

On the 931BW: now there's the 931CW, I don't know its specs, but I suppose it should be a widescreen 931C, which is claimed to have good colour reproduction.

Great find jazw, just read the review at spcr + yours, and that's a front runner for sure.

Thanks for the heads up on that Queelis, at this stage I'll probably wind up with one of the two.

Money's not really the issue, I'm tempted with a larger screen, really I am. But I know where all this ends --> nice fitting 45 cm width space right now for 19 inch monitor, it's been a stable, comfortable, loving, long term home. To expand the space to a 22 inch screen at 50 cm would mean picking up new furniture ..trips to Ikea, eating meat balls ...I can't begin to tell you the pandora's box - can of worms you've started by me going down this path.

Actually at 45cm wide you can get a 20" standard (non-widescreen) which is actually a higher resolution than a 19" widescreen
eg Samsung SM203B

EDIT: Samsung SyncMaster 203B 20" standard version of the syncmaster £205

Random thought - but if only the backlights gone it should be possible to replace it (carefully, they're full of highly refined e v i l) - i've read people do it for seemingly dead laptop screens. Just a thought

Yes it is possible, however getting hold of a correct back light can be a total pain.
Most manufactors change the design of bits with every new model and charge a small fortune for replacement parts.

I've tried twice to with laptops to be foiled both times by slight differnces. and it's often cheaper to buy a new laptop than pay the amount they charge for a replacement screen.
