What PSU should I use for my new build System
Hi guy's:)
I'm planning to build a new system for myself with these specs
Intel Core 2 Duo E6750, S775, 2.66 GHz, 1333MHz FSB
Asus P5K Deluxe/WiFi-AP
2x 2GB (2x1GB) CorsairTwinX XMS2 Dominator
Zalman CNPS9500-AT Intel LGA775 Aero Flower Cooler
256MB Gainward 8600GTS Bliss, PCI-E (x16), Mem 2000 MHz, GDDR3, GPU 675 MHz, Dual DVI/HDTV
Antec P182 Advanced PERFORMANCE ONE SERIES Super Midi Tower Case, Black (no PSU)
2x 500 Gb Western Digital WD5000AAKS Caviar SE16
2 x Optiarc/NEC AD-7173A-0B 18xDVD±R, 8xDVD±DL, DVD+RW x8/-RWx6, DVD-RAMx12, IDE, Black, OEM, Labelflash
Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 7.1
DVB-T card
2 x 120mm fans
what PSU should I use and why? I want a good qualtiy quiet unit, (currently using Tagan 380w - a bit nosiey:confused:)
Thank you.:)
Re: What PSU should I use for my new build System
Pretty much everyone will recommend a corsiar 520/620, and whilst I agree they do seem solid units. I do have some gripes with mine compared to my old Hiper 530.
Firstly, the corsair 520 I have is not 100% modular, automatically giving me one extra un-needed cable.
Secondly, it seems a lot lounder (people may well disagree here) and I have no tangible way of measuring it, but it definately does seem that way.
Thirdly, the range of cables didn't quite match my components as well as the hiper, leaving me another cable I could have done without.
Many will say 'don't listen to me' cos Hipers have load of problems etc etc, but in my limited experience, I'm not as happy with the Corsair as I thought I would be :(
Re: What PSU should I use for my new build System
corsair hx520w or hx620w
you do know that graphics card will not do you very well in games it may have dx10 but thats the only thing going for it buy a good dx9 card like an x1950xt £100ish these days it will be twice as good or go the whole hog and buy an 8800gts £170ish if you want dx10 for gaming
BEAT ME BY A FEW SECONDS DOUG
and as doug said hipers are pretty good i loved my 580w modular only downside was no 8 pin for the motherboard :(

Thank you for your experiences, lets see what other people have to say. Cheers

Hmm, my 530 had a 4 pin for the mobo, and using the 8 pin from the corsair doesn't seem to have made any positive difference (apart from leaving me with a spare 4 pin cover :P )

Hi dan, thank you for your comments, Sorry I didn\'t mention I\'m not a gamer, I will be using this system for general business use, movie editing real time and surfing..
this spec has been recommended to me by a friend, any further recommendations welcome

Most boards built to use either, it won\'t make a difference if getting enough power. Rest assured though the Corsair is a quality unit, well built and 5 yr warranty and more powerful than the Hiper.
I\'d also suggest you try to save up a little more for a 8800 GTS, it is a big step up from a 8600 which may not have the power to really make use of that DX10 capability.

what is DX10, as I said I'm not a gamer!!:)
Re: What PSU should I use for my new build System
Ohh sorry, I didn't notice that, ho humm, well a 8600 GTS is prolly overkill in that case unless you need the video / CPU offload features etc which isn't my forte.

Thank you
anyone wishing to take this further, please do :)
Re: What PSU should I use for my new build System
The 8600GTS is probably the best card for you, or a 8600GT as they have the best hardware HD decodeing.
The corsair 620w would be overkill the 520w would be fine.
Any good make 500w should be fine and cost around £50-65
Re: What PSU should I use for my new build System
Any decent 400W PSU will be enough for this system. 500 is overkill.

You're probably right, I'm not 100% on the power draw of the 8600GTS so I err'd on the side of caution.
Re: What PSU should I use for my new build System
A decent 400W PSU will do just about any system failing 8800 Ultra SLi setups.
Re: What PSU should I use for my new build System
Is there a way we can work out the power draw?
I'd rather have more than less for future upgrades
Thanks
Re: What PSU should I use for my new build System
I'd probably stick a £35-£45 FSP or Xclio PSU or whatever is on offer. I've recently been buying Seasonic 430W PSUs of late due to good noise and efficiency. Anything that is 80%+ efficient with a 120mm fan is likely to be very quiet.
