Are you an Enthusiast Gamer?
I really like this hardware forum for technical information, but it seems to be swamped with so much stuff about graphics and game performance.
How many people on here are enthusiast gamers and how many are just a general PC enthusiast?
Please try to choose Yes or No,
and only choose Inbetween if you really don't fit in either.
Note to Moderators: Please don't move this thread to general, because It's here to find the results of people in THIS, the Hardware forum, not the general forum.

Re: Are you an Enthusiast Gamer?
Work hard, play hard!
However, although I use it for all-sorts, games is what stresses my PCs the most.

Re: Are you an Enthusiast Gamer?
Mainly bought my current rig as something to do this year which im on my placement. Mostly by fun i mean play games but i enjoyed building it and I use it for programming, the odd bit of design work, video encoding and the usual surfing etc..
I was in dire need or a new pc as i hadn't had one for around 6 years apart from my now 3 year old laptop.
When I do play games though I want them to run perfectly and although I only play a few hours a week its enjoyable when I do.

Re: Are you an Enthusiast Gamer?
Must admit that while I do use my PC for other things these days I spend most of my time gameing. :innocent:
MMO's are stealing my life!

Re: Are you an Enthusiast Gamer?
I only really got into computer games, because of insomnia. If there's a choice of games or going out then games always lose, but if you're sleeping less than 15 hours a week like me, games are far better than late night telly.

Re: Are you an Enthusiast Gamer?
I used to play games every day all day but now, I really don't. Don't know why but these days I have a really small attention span for games - and its annoying that I can't run them as nicely as I used to because my PC is now getting soooooooo old.

Re: Are you an Enthusiast Gamer?
I tend to play in chunks - that's to say, every few weeks or so I'll have a run on a particular game for several days running - then I'll just get bored of it and won't play any games and so on and so forth. That said, when I spec a new PC I do try to get it as powerful as possible with a view to playing games.

Re: Are you an Enthusiast Gamer?
I must say, I'm suprised with the No's winning this poll so far! because of the sheer volume of graphics card game related posts!

Re: Are you an Enthusiast Gamer?
Hexus users are the worst sort - we buy all the technology but don't always use it all the time ;)

Re: Are you an Enthusiast Gamer?
After quitting world or crackcraft the amount of time spent gaming has reduced dramatically. Infact I think I'm still in gaming rehab and it will be a while before I start to pick up again.

Re: Are you an Enthusiast Gamer?
Lol, I am still doing World of Warcrack. I can give it up anytime, honest :)
Sad bit is I upgraded my graphics card, then started playing WoW which really doesn't need it and haven't touched the modern games sat on the shelf.

You can imagine how chuffed my Mrs is with that.....

Re: Are you an Enthusiast Gamer?
I don't play that much lately. Like some others, I recently gave up the wow addiction, and before that I was regularly playing cs and cod in a clan. Nowadays I tend to watch tv-series, play a bit of poker, and every now and then a great game comes which takes up some time. :D
I play the odd bit of css/bf2/qw and still consider myself a gamer though, and build a pc to match.

Re: Are you an Enthusiast Gamer?
I haven't played a game for months. I'll probably get into a game again sometime, when work stops jetting me off to the US every other week.

Re: Are you an Enthusiast Gamer?
GRR, I should have thought about the poll options a bit more before I posted... too many people inbetween when I was hoping people would try ans answer the simple yes or no.

Re: Are you an Enthusiast Gamer?
I use my PC for all sorts, I don't really game as much as I used to, but that may change with the advent of BioShock, Crysis and the Orange Box ;).

Re: Are you an Enthusiast Gamer?
I play a lot of games.
I'm currently out of work too, so its even worse. However I also spend a lot of time using the pc for media and seem to spend forever trying to work out why photoshop doesnt do quite what I expected it to do. Most likely a brain/keyboard interface error.

Re: Are you an Enthusiast Gamer?

Re: Are you an Enthusiast Gamer?
Zero gaming is still less than 10 hours ;)
-
Re: Are you an Enthusiast Gamer?
i would say yes, about 70% of my usage of my computer is on games

Re: Are you an Enthusiast Gamer?
I selected indeterminate, as some weeks I don't game, yet other weeks I can get completely lost in a good adventure.
The 10 hour boundary to me is a little high for a certain half of the population. My own rough knowledge of other female gamers puts this figure as being perceived as quite heavy gaming, whilst male gamers I know think nothing of only ten hours of play a week.
Interestingly, though, it does actually seem that the ten hour mark is around the right position for the boundard between casual and hardcore. Here is a Recent study into gamer activities, and an older one into gamer demograpics, which nicely supports my thoughts. If you're really into the demographics, by the way, you may also want to check out the Daedalus project about MMO demographics (which differs from other games).
Also working on my experience, I'd say that to talk simply about the hours spent gaming is perhaps not the best way to judge the importance of gaming to a person, and how it would hence effect their hardware choices. Spending a couple of minutes here and there playing flash based games which eventually totals up to a dozen hours a week of gaming is quite a different creature to spending just six hours a week playing a fully modded Oblivion install that looks very pretty. I've also noticed similar trends with regards to the gender divide, with women sacrificing performance for high quality visuals, whereas most male gamers I know tend to obsess about their raw performance.
(hopefully it will let me post links by now...)
