Is it worth replacing the stock HS&F on a E6750 for a quiet PC - NOT overclocked.

I'm going to build a quiet PC,

For graphics I'm going to get a Power Color X1950 card with the Arctic cooling that runs at only 21dB
For case fans I'm getting 1000RPM sharkoons

I'm not going to be overclocking, is it worth getting a 3rd party cooler for the CPU or is the stock HS&F fairly quiet?

If you think I should get a 3rd party cooler, I don't want to spend a lot of money on one, can you recommend one?

The stock cooler isnt good for a quiet pc, but then again, it depends what you find quiet.

I can't find any reviews that compare the volume with the stock cooler!

Run the stock cooler. If it's too loud then replace with an aftermarket one. 20db is very quiet.

No idea what Db rating the stock cooler is. All I know is, they are noisy and inefficient, and could kill you if they fell out of a tree.

Yeah, that's what any normal person would do, but I was kinda thinking it would be cool to be able to keep the CPU cooler as a spare because I repair people's PCs quite often and would be handy to have a spare stock cooler with the thermal paste untouched - cause I could sell it to them and get the money back that I spent on a 3rd party cooler :P

Pick a scythe ninja or something similar from scan and an S-flex fan, will be very quiet and very cool.

It shows the stock cooler being real quiet in comparison to 3rd party coolers, so I'll stick with the stock.

(If you're shocked by those comparisons, it's because they are of the fans at max speed).

If there is no overclocking going on then couldnt you run the automatic motherboard fan controller so that the CPU fan would only run as fast as it needs to thus keeping the volume down

only thing is some of those heatsinks totally depend on the type of fan used

The stock cooler fan now throttles with the CPU. All in all, it's fairly quiet the majority of the time.

To be fair, the stock cooler with C2D's isnt that bad as far as stock coolers go.

Not the best but its a huge leap from the origianl 775 stock coolers

Personally I believe that the Arctic Coolers for graphics cards are too loud. Zalman 900Cu at 5 volts is just about quiet enough.

Don't use the stock heatsink if you are worried about noise, you need a scythe ninja or something like that and even then, still undervolt the fan.

If no OC there are HS's that don't need a fan at all (dependent on case airflow), e.g. the Scythe Ninja. That's a fair bit quieter than the stock... :D

I was just about to recommend frostytech to get info about cooling :D
You might also want to check any anandtech's HSF reviews, they compare idle/load noise as well.

But they pay attention mostly to the performance, so mainly they only check if the fan doesn't keep the noise over the whole system's.
