Help! Which PSU should I buy from these two?

Hi…..I seen an advert for a “Corsair HX620W” PSU for about £80inc VAT. I know it is a good PSU, in fact as you all probobly know it was classed as one of the best you hard earned cash could buy, but is it getting dated?

The thing is, I was considering this “Thermaltake W0116 Toughpower 750W Modular PSU” for £71 from (awd-it.com/scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=1269)

The brand name doesn’t mean anything to me; Thermaltake has improved a lot recently and offer a 5-year grantee (US only) I also don’t know if Corsair’s 620w will be enough for the PC I am making?

So if anyone has any recommendations…….then post on (Corsair offer ends on Sunday 12th)

My PC Build so far :-

    Core 2 Quad Q6600 G0
    Asus Striker Extreme
    Ge-Force 7950 GX2 520M
    Akasa all in one (black)
    DVB TV card
    2Gig of RAM
    2 x Hard Drives
    2 x DVD Drives
    P180 Case

    Many Thanks

The Corsair should handle that system easily and also has a 5 year warranty (definately available in UK). You can also talk to Corsair on this very forum if you have a problem

You may want to check out the PSU reviews on www.jonnyguru.com, the HX620 and a few of the Toughpower series are on there.

The Corsair 620w is easily enough for that system.

I would urge you to look into a different motherboard though. That one has RMA written all over it.

Aye and get the P182 rather than the P180. Unless you like to see lots of wires in your case.

Nope, Corsair 520 here and it's fantastic. The modular connections, stable rails and silent running means it gets 2 thumbs up from me!

I've been put off enermax by a previous PSU having duff fans in it (Noisetaker 600W).

    Thanks guys for your help.

I was all set to order the Corsair HX620W, when I came across this online power supply calculator…..”eXtreme Power Supply Calculator Lite v2.5” and punched in all the numbers.

A short time later it came up with the answer…….a beefy 727w, now I’m worried about buying an underpowered PSU.

Re: Help! Which PSU should I buy from these two?

Don't trust any power supply calculator. Just check few reviews with power consumption tests. Like this one from xbitlabs:

And test bed was equiped with QX6850, 2GB of DDR2-800 RAM, 150GB Raptor and 8800GTX.

My vote goes for the Corsair since all Thermaltake PSUs reviews from decent sources I've seen indicated pour voltage stability and overrated specs.

Thats my signal to wade in
The Corsair 520W = Good Unit and great value
The Corsair 620W = Over-priced and poor value (though it is decent). TO be fair though, for £80 its actually good value. When its up near £100 like most places its not!

Just hope you dont need to RMA anything Corsair to the manufacturer base (if the shop warranty has gone....28 days isnt it?), because, unless you live in America, you are well and truly stuffed. It will cost you half as much of the worth of the unit just to ship it back. In the USA they hot-ship RMA'd parts. Unfortunatley, being in Europe we are not thought of as highly.
This is why i like Enermax.

I would go with the corsair too...got one in my current system and its very good! Very quiet even when hot and good steady rails!

I would be tempted to get a more powerful one than the corsair, why not?
