    Intel Core 2 Duo E6850 or Q6600?

Just as I was about to order my sub-£500 quad-core 4GB system, someone suggested that I seriously consider the Intel Core 2 Duo E6850 CPU instead of the Q6600. Not only is it cheaper, but at stock settings it is supposed to be faster (3GHz clock vs 2.4GHz clock of the Q6600). For a PC that's simply going to be used for Vista-64 doing Web surfing, emails, a bit of photo editting and some CAD software, which one would you go for (assuming the system will have 4GB of RAM)? I would need the system to last at least five years.

To be honest, for what they're planning to get up to, they're both complete and utter total overkill

Since the saving is only in the region of £17, if they are using professional CAD software, and as they want the system to last five years, then I would probably say that the quad core could be a more interesting bet and potentially more promising in the long run. See my post in another thread for my thoughts in full.

Given the relatively small price difference, it really does seem to be much of a muchness to me, though.

either will last 5 years but, it'll be damn slow. the quad will last you longer as in 5 years there will be more multi threaded programs that can utilise 4 or more cores. But what I'd do is take the dual core and keep the saved money for a later upgrade if needed. But reading the above post its a saving of £17? Just take the quad.

Quad. The 6850 would have been the better choice for gaming...

The E6850 is priced at £115.14 and the Q6600 is £132.76. So, there's very little in it, but bear in mind that this is for a PC-build challenge to build a very powerful machine for under £500 so every £1 counts!

    Ahhh!

Then you've neglected to give us one vital bit of information - how is the winner going to be determined?

It's pointless talking about power without talking about how that power is going to be measured. Some testing methods will love quad core, others will care only for raw clock speed.

I'm assuming the rules mean that you're not allowed to overclock?

Re: Intel Core 2 Duo E6850 or Q6600?

    ^ Correct! No overclocking.

The person i'm building it for will open an Excel or Word doc once in a while, lots of Internet surfing using IE7, he'll be transferring photgraphs from a digital camera quite regularly and printing them out or emailing them. He has one old CAD application but that is running perfectly well on the current 5-year old system.

He'll be creating Word docs every now and then and maybe creating some poster-style documents using the HP bundled software.

So, all in all, nothing too taxing but I don't want to have to build him another PC for a few years and i'm paying for this one!

Re: Intel Core 2 Duo E6850 or Q6600?

Personally since processors are seldom the bottlenecking part of a PC these days, an e4300 would do the job nicely for £75. I think in 5 years any processor is going to be showing it's age, 5 years ago now what did we have.. Pentium III?

Thats my 2p anyway, go best performance vs cost and save the rest of money. 6850 is very much in diminishing returns territory, as is the q6600 unless you are using it for specific cpu heavy applications.

Having said that, if it's a contest to get the best PC for £500... that's quite interesting. Are they going to benchmarked in any particular program? You can do the good old trick of setting up the system to completely floor the opposition in that particular benchmark.

Re: Intel Core 2 Duo E6850 or Q6600?

^ To be honest, there won't be a benchmark per se, just the Vista Windows Experience Index I guess. That has an upper limit of 5.9 and I'd personally be happy to build a system that can score around 5.0 for under £500. That would ensure decent performance for simple acitvities for a few years I imagine.

Re: Intel Core 2 Duo E6850 or Q6600?

i think you'll get more than just 5 with that system... my E2160 at stock hit 4.something - i can't remember... with a nice OC to 3ghz, it jumped to 5.7. The WEI is both easy and flawed

Re: Intel Core 2 Duo E6850 or Q6600?

If you are going to get a dual core just get a pentium dual core for £50, if you can't see the point in the quad there is no point in a 3.0GHz dual (pentium duals overclock to that anyway).

If the budget is there you might as well get the quad as they are only going to mature over time where duals will start showing their age a lot sooner regardless of clocks.

Think about low clock duals vs high clocks single cores, they win out almost every time.

Something like an E7200 running at 2.53ghz should be fine for most things. It is competitive in performance to the older E6750 running at 2.66ghz! You will save nearly £30 over the E6850 too!

i got and e2140 @2.9 with 2gb ram and an x1900xt and that gets 5.4 on the index scale so an e4300 would do and i use mine for games sometimes and it runs most
