    quick q6660 check

will it be compatable with my setup in 'mysystem'?

another question is will changing the processor mess up the vista installation needing a re-install of the OS? as its OEM it will need phoning for a new Key?

    Re: quick q6660 check

I believe it will be. IT can support an FSB of 1066 so you shouldnt have problems.
And I thought an OS "phoning in for a new key" only applies to a new motherboard as thats considered "a new pc" could be different with vista.....

    Re: quick q6660 check

I think you may be ok changing the CPU with regards to activation, as long as you don't change too much (from what I've read after a certain number of parts are changed you will then get a problem and changing mobo models will invalidate it for sure).

    Re: quick q6660 check

Vista creates a hash based on your hardware every time it boots up.......once the hash changes by a certain amount, windows deactivates. Each different piece of hardware is assigned a weight, so certain components will push you towards re-activation faster then others.

AFAIK, the motherboard is the only item which can force re-activation solely on its own. BIOS updates can sometimes cause it to happen (presumably because it thinks the motherboard has changed)

Changing the CPU only, will not cause it to de-activate (as I did that myself last night ) but if you have changed any other hardware since window was first installed, changing the CPU might push you over the edge.

A quick free phone call to Microsoft will have you reactivated in no time though if that happens.

Vista is fine changing CPUs in my experience, otherwise I'd have been reactivating every other week.

    Re: quick q6660 check

I think i'm a prince if not the King of Re-Activation, i must be in the hundreds for XP and in the 20's for Vista.
And everyone is the same at Microsoft Phone Activation with the same questions they ask you and not once have i been told it can't be Activated.
I try a lot of software and duel boots and sometimes it can't be fixed without a Format and start again, i'm lucky i got a lot of time on my hands.

I'm using XP Media center 2005 and Vista Ultimate on the same Pc and it's never a problem with Activation.
Just got Vista 64-bit so will be doing a format and an install of that OS so that will be interesting to see if i get any problems with it.
