I've decided it's time to upgrade from my E4300 (3.2Ghz on a P5B :) - great guide Clunk) to a faster processor.
I can't decide between the Q6600 (G0 stepping from Scan?) or the E6850 which I've been told can hit over 4Ghz, anyone got any thoughts?

my only thought is for you to ask yourself whether you actually need it.
I'd personally have the q6600, i really enjoyed using the pc i built with one, super quick.. great for video encoding.
I may need to uprade your mobo to hit those kind of speeds with the E6850..might be wrong though.
Do I need it? No, not at all, but what else am I going to spend my long overdue redundancy cheque on?
I haven't looked closely at what speed would (theoretically) be achievable on my motherboard, but it runs quite happily on 1600Mhz bus at the moment so it should be okay.
I see your point lol.
Well i think the q6600 is a better way to go. Get the G0 stepping one and you should be able to overclock it quite nicely.
If it were me I'd go for the Q6600 simply because it's got quad core and in theory it should stand by you a bit longer or at least give you potentially more computing power.. That said, you could save the money and go for the E6850 and put the savings either towards some other peripherals or another chip further down the road.. but, as I said, if it were me it'd be the quad. :)
Hmmm, from what I can see on Scan the chips look about equally priced. I'm very tempted towards the Q6600 just for the sheer quad core pimpage.
A thought on the side... I've got a Freezer 7 Pro, would it be worth getting a new HSF as well?
I would've thought so (get a new HSF) though I've no experience with how hot a G0 quad would run - I've got that same heatsink and it coped fine with a dual core but I certainly wouldn't trust it on my QX6700. I've got a Scythe Infinity with two 120mm fans on it and that just about copes with it. :)
the freezer would run the B3 at stock..at the upper end of the prefered temps though. the scythe ninja i had on the one i built ran it between 33-38 degrees depending on the core when idle and 52 -55 under load with stock settings
The g0 would probably overclock on the freezer but something like the scythe ninja or tuniq 120 would probably be better.
What about getting a new monitor?
perhaps a 22inch jobbie. :)
personally i would put the redundancy cheque in savings let it gt interest and then buy one of the new intel chips in the new year :)
No. 72 - that's also on the cards, what with Bioshock just around the corner.
Biscuit - most of it is... but I can't let an excuse to buy some new gear slip me by!
Nah, did that for a couple of years before I got bored with all the hassle... changing the fluid every few months and having to take it apart whenever I upgraded!
Set up a raid system?
also would say new monitor. Take use of that 640mb GTS!!
It's only a 320 but you're right! A nice 22" widescreen would beat the crap out of my 19". I've just seen this on scan's 'today only' http://www.scan.co.uk/products/produ...oductID=652428, anyone know if it's any good?
