Tried that with 1st board when AHCI wouldn't let system boot, switched to legacy mode and switched sata to ide, still got garbled boot screen but installed xp very very slowly and after startup system was just not stable, lockups etc, although all temps/voltages were well within specs.
I have tried all i can with this apart from another cpu, but this board will not work with my present p4 630 so i'm stuck. Even when i managed to get xp installing ok after installing chipset drvers and lan drivers the whole system locked up totally.
I've been through the bios settings and know that all is ok except for the audio setting, there is no option to disable onboard audio.
I think the best option is to wait until abit sort the double boot with ip35 and then get that board and pray it works.
The main thing that makes me think the board is stuffed is the garbled boot screen, never had that sort of problem, if cpu was not seated you get the usual whine and system would shutdown, and memory problems would give beeps as would graphic card problems, this system gives no beeps at all.
When i took the 1st board back i also took photos of the garbled screen, the board was replaced within 3 days, and they did not even question problem or test board.
I might try and reconfigure the bios with intel integrator toolkit to show all hidden options and then do bios recovery to see if anything changes, after that it will be time for a big hammer.

well u may have struck it unlucky twice in a row, if you got 2 boards from the same batch on the production line it maybe be that they are all bad.

The first board was BTDP726001RS and the second was BTDP726001QS, don't get closer than that.
I think it best to contact Intel and see what they say.
    Thanks for the help.
