PSU capable of running 7600GT
Hi all,
Just upgraded to the below spec (if you can see it) last week and system was randonly rebooting and crashing to desktop. After thinking it was heat related (swapping fan and thermal gunk) I come to the conclusion (with aid of VGA card manual) that my PSU is not up to the job. Now having spent a few £££'s on the parts its not left me much over for a PSU.
My question is which PSU to buy, my budget is £40. Is that possible?
TIA

Re: PSU capable of running 7600GT
The 400W FSP ATX-400PNF will laugh at it and should be solid too. Anything more is just overkill unless you're planning more upgrades soon. I couldn't justify the extra £10 for the 380W Seasonic, as FSP are generally very solid, if not spectacular.
Re: PSU capable of running 7600GT
Thanks for that
I'm going to my local computer store tomorrow to see what they have got, two questions
Am I right in saying that I need one with DUAL +12V RAILS?
Does it have to be 'SLI READY' if Im connecting only one card to me AGP slot?
TIA
Re: PSU capable of running 7600GT
Gav, 400W FSP ATX-400PNF. Doesnt sound too bad.
Not planing upgrades, and only run with one DVD ReWriter, floppy and one HDD

1) Dont. They will charge way more than Scan et all, and sell you a cheapo Q-tec "550 watt" that won't last, unless you happen to have a good local store.
Dont buy anything less than a well known, branded PSU.
2) No dual rails are not needed
3) Ignore SLI ready - Its not related to what you need if you are using AGP :) You do not need it.
Re: PSU capable of running 7600GT
I would they are a good local store in my area anyway
Got this off their website, one of you guys mentioned ANTEC. Does it sound any good?
dcs-online.biz/shop/product_info.php/cPath/62/products_id/6978
I would prefer to buy in person, just if any problems. Thats my way
Re: PSU capable of running 7600GT
Should do it, yeah. Not a bad price for a retailer either. I'd still head for the FSP or Seasonic personally, but at that price you'd have issues in your head not to take that Antec, given the lack of postage and things. That said, the word 'BASIQ' in the title doesn't fill me with too much confidence... cross your fingers it's not a totally stripped down PSU or a Q-tec look-alike with an Antec badge stuck on it.

I eat my words :D
Thats a good price for a shop, and a decent PSU :)
Go for it mate :)
Re: PSU capable of running 7600GT
It says its only got a +12V outpout of 10A
Let me quote form the POV manual
"Geforcr graphics cards require a stable 12 volt power source. A sutible power supply can support between 20 and 30 amperes on its 12 volt lines"
Im getting confused here
What would be the total amp output if a card supplied 15A on +12v1 and 10A on +12v2
Would that be 25A?
Re: PSU capable of running 7600GT
No don't get that on, my reason is:
ANTEC PSU BASIQ, 350W A/PFC RETAIL BOXED.
The basiq series have far weaker rails than the NeoHE and EarthWatts (which are the best antec models)
http://www.dcs-online.biz/shop/produ...oducts_id/7756 that's the one you want :)

It is a bit confuseing generally they cannot support full load by adding all the rails together voltage, protection will kickin before that happens on most good PSU's.
rule of thumb is 75% of rail totals.

It will still do the job though. For a basic desktop machine, it'll be ok :)

It depends on what type of PSU, and what rail.
The Basiq PSU is http://www.antec.com/specs/BP350_spe.html
Thats got 2 +12V rails, totalling about 23A.

Ah but does this consist of the basic machine?
2GB ram
AMD 64 3700 Sandiego
CD Rom drive
160 GB HDD
Thermaltake CPU and Case fan
SB Audigy
OK, so 75% of BASIQ PSU is 17.5A
and
75% of the ANTEC 420W earthwatt is 24A, which is what the manual states is the requirement boundary.
15 pound difference but I guess its a small proce to pay if I can play on computer with less hassle
Re: PSU capable of running 7600GT
Yes, thats basic by todays standards.
Have a read of http://forums.hexus.net/showthread.php?t=115550
That will explain, in detail, what PC's draw on average. I've no idea where Pob got that 75% figure from to be honest :) Most quality PSU's can exceed their rated specs.
Re: PSU capable of running 7600GT
I would also advise against the Antec Basiq. Some of the lower end Antec psus are a bit naff IMO.
The FSP/Fortron recommended above would be better.
Re: PSU capable of running 7600GT
What about the Antec Earthwatts as recommended above, I like thi sbacause of the price, availability and what has been said above
I have included a list of specs form the website, obviously I will check them on the PSU
