Spec me a gaming system for under £950 please!

Hi there, my mate has asked me to build him a PC for around £900, give or take £50. If anyone can be bothered or is a little bored, how about you comment on my selections or suggest better options - maybe I've missed something obvious?

It's completely from scratch, so needs case, wireless mouse and keyboard set, monitor (preferably 19").

So far I came up with these - one from ebuyer and one from scan.

    Ebuyer

Re: Spec me a gaming system for under £950 please!

    EBuyer
Hiper PSU: High risk of burnout.
    ASUS P5B DLX/WIFI-AP: P35 boards are better.
Samsung SH-S183 SATA: SH-203 is better as well as faster. 183 has some burning issues.
Creative Inspire T3100 Speakers: not good, get the Logitech X230.

    Scan
    Corsair Dominator: Overpriced.
400 Gb Samsung: 500Gb is better value.
    256MB Asus Radeon X1950Pro: 512Mb better.
Asus P5K-E/WIFI-AP: could save a bit of money by going for ABit if you don't need the WiFi.
Speed-Link SL-8236: as above, get Logitechs.
LiteOn DH-16D2P-02C/LN19090 LG GSA-H55N : The Samsung SH-203 ot LiteON DH-20A1S (SATA) are better drives. If you want a second drive the ASUS 1814 SATA does Lightscribe.

Re Scan: You don't have enough posts to get free delivery. Have you looked at the Today Only stuff?

Re Soundcard: Onboard sound is pretty good on these boards. There will be a bit of difference, but it will be more about a bit of processor power saved than noticeable sound improvement.

Re: Spec me a gaming system for under £950 please!

If you can afford to wait until items come on Today Only here is my build in progress...(prices inc VAT)

Intel Q6600 £166.84 (currently £164.44 on this weekends offers)
    Abit IP35-E £62.26
    4Gb (2x"Gb kits) Corsair DDR2 XMS2 PC5400 £96.33
    XFX 8800GTS 640Mb £234.99
    2x Optiarc 7173Z IDE drives £33.49
FSB Bluestorm II 500W PSU £35.24
22" Cibox TFT with DVI £150.39
What i got left to get
    Seagate 500Gb Sata around £60
    Antec 900 around £65
    Vista Premium around £63
    Keyboard/Mouse/WiFi about £50

Although it comes up to around £1000 you can save money by halving the RAM, dropping to a 19" Monitor, and picking a cheaper case.

Although if you cant wait for the items to come up on offer (although there is something up everyday) the similar build will be a bit pricey, think im saving about £50-100, which i used to go from 320Mb GFX to 640Mb

TrentBoy: Don't bother with a 640MB 8800GTS, 95% of the time they perform exactly the same as the 320MB model.

Well he won't have a clue what overclocking is, but I might do a small overclock on it!

Need WiFi, thought i'd be as well to get a mobo with it built in, rather than an extra PCI card.

Ah too bad I have already bought the 640Mb version, never mind im sure there must be some benefits in it over the 320Mb.

Re: Spec me a gaming system for under £950 please!

A tip on RAM (if u r going to use Windows OS)

32bit windows will not recognise full 4 GB ram (max will be 3.5 GB depending on other hardware) if u are going for 4 GB ram than go for 64bit.

    SC
    Dev Desktop: P6N D, Q6600 2.40GHZ, 4GB (2x2GB) RAM, BFG GeForce 8800 GTX OC 768MB, BFG 800W PSU, Tsunami VA3000BWA Black, Vista 64

    Dev Server : Intel Xenon (x2) @ 1.22 GHZ , 512 RAM, 300 GB IDE HDD, 74 GB SATA Raid 0+1, 300W PSU, Win2K3 R2

    Laptop 1 : Dell Lat D410, Intel M 1.73 Ghz, 1GB (2x512) RAM, 40 GB HDD, XP pro SP2

Re: Spec me a gaming system for under £950 please!

Originally the spec had an IP-35 and LG L226WTQ but then I saw 'dannyboy83' preferred on-board Wi-Fi.

And thanks man, I'm still pretty stunned - expect a thread with photos and what-not very soon.

Aye that's a point, then you can use the £10 saved to get a pre-overclocked 8800GTS... or go to the pub.

[I've can't decide! I could either replace the X850XT in my folks' PC or sell it on, how much do they go for?]
