P5K Deluxe: Upgraded the CPU, now not booting with 2 sticks of RAM!
So I upgraded my CPU from an E6600 to an E6850, and after the system wouldn't boot simply switching the CPU, I figured oh fair enough, just needs a bios tweak as the CPU's run at a different FSB, however after switching back to the E6600 I found it'd only boot with 1 stick of RAM, which was odd. Since I could get the system booting however, I took the opportunity to reset the bios, so it'd work with the new CPU. After this I fitted the new chip, and found again it wouldn't boot with 2 sticks of RAM. And it still won't. On top of that with just the 1 stick, it won't load Vista, it'll BSOD instead
So now my dilemma is.. It won't boot to vista with 1 stick, and it won't even power on with 2 sticks. I've tried all I can think of, switched the slots etc.
Im looking at updating the bios. Im currently running 0404, perhaps upgrading to 0501.
Any thoughts would be appreciated!

Are you running the ram according to the SPD on it?? Try slackening it off a bit.

Re: P5K Deluxe: Upgraded the CPU, now not booting with 2 sticks of RAM!
I had the same problem with Q6600 and vista 64. Wouldnt boot with 2 sticks, but taking one stick out was alright. In the end i just kept switching sticks & slots( and changing between having 2 sticks & the 1) until it worked. Turning PC off & un plugging it between each attempt.
Sorry i cant be of more use but i just used trial & error. Shame the same doesnt work with software & vista 64 though. :(

Re: P5K Deluxe: Upgraded the CPU, now not booting with 2 sticks of RAM!
thanks for the quick responses. Obviously I had the ram set up fine before clearing the CMOS so I have considered it's a setting that needs a tweak or what not. I was considering the issue might be a common one and there are certain things with this board I not alone on, for example the CoAX SPDIF no longer being recognised after a while. I was wondering if a bios upgrade helped with these RAM issues. I dont think the RAM is faulty, since all I did was change the cpu and it was running perfectly before.
Andehh - did u try running the repair tool from the vista disk?
The way you resolved it sounded like a bit of trial and error, perhaps changing things often forced the CMOS to reset properly or something? I've pretty much accepted I may have to reinstall vista. This is a pretty bizzarre issue, never had this before switching a CPU, the most i've had to do is clear the CMOS.
As for the SPD, It was left at default, because I've always assumed the auto values a motherboard gives ram are insanely slack and could boot pretty much any ram on the market. I'll give it a go at all the rated settings, and let everyone know. In the meantime, if anyone else has had this or has any suggestions, feel free to share! :)

You need to set the RAM voltage manually, as you do with all the settings after a CMOS clear.

Which slots did you put the ram modules into? The p5k series of boards are rather picky about which slots are used.

You are right, but that isnt the behaviour of the RAM in the wrong slots. Ill bet money that its the voltage or the RAM is faulty :)

Out of interest, what is "behaviour of the RAM in the wrong slots" please?
Got a few ppl asking me for a list of new PC parts and the P5K was near the top of list of my boards to recommend :)

Re: P5K Deluxe: Upgraded the CPU, now not booting with 2 sticks of RAM!
the thing about the voltage is that I had it set at the rated voltage of the ram firstly, 2.4v
I am using the black slots, though I have mucked around in all of em.
The RAM I hope isn't faulty, since with my E6600 it was working like a dream!

Memory, particularly using micron chips, clocks better & is more stsble in the black slots than the yellow pair.

Errors in memtest, random oddness, and as Supershanks said :)

Is this a P35 thing, an ASUS thing, or a P5K Deluxe thing?

All the Asus boards that I have had for c2d have done this, including the P5B, commando, P5W-DH, P5K, P5N32-E SLI, and also, I think that the Gerbilbyte DS3 did it as well.

update : after clearing the CMOS properly, it wont boot at all, not even with 1 stick, it just powers on.

Its possible that you have 2 dead sticks. It is rare, but not impossible. It happened to me last week.
Do you have any spare RAM that you can try?
