SCSI confusion
Hey chaps,
i'm pretty new to the world of 10k, so not really sure what i'm doing.
I purchased some 18.4GB SCSI drives from filbert in F/S; they've just arrived.
Theres a single long connector on the back, which i think is 80-pin would that be right?
I cant remember the type of SCSI card that I've got, but its a 68-pin. These interfaces are both ultra 160 right? so are they compatible?
I'm also looking to squeeze the four drives into 3 5.25" bays. Is this possible, like it is for standard SATA or IDE drives?

Re: SCSI confusion
Hello Steve and welcome to SCSI.
It is possible the cable is an 80 pin connector, the card is ultra 160 most probably, rather than the physical interfaces. SCSI disks are the same size as PATA disks so if you can do it with PATA you can do it with scsi - however normal caddies won't work due to the different connectors.
The thing to remember with scsi - more so than SATA is you pay for what you get in a BIG way. Cheapo SCSI cards, cables, drives = crap so you're performance WILL suffer and you won't get the max out of it, with a good £250-£300 style card you'll be flying

Re: SCSI confusion
Hmm, im not really sure i have £250-£300 to spend on a card :( I'll check the model number of the card that in the house when i get home from work. I ripped it out a dual P3 machine, and the cable is 68-pin, thats why I thought the card would be too.

Re: SCSI confusion
ebay might get you a high end card for the price of a cheep special. but as ikonia says SCSI is only for those that are willing to shell out a lot of money for the right controller card, otherwise if you fancy licking your wounds and accepting lower performance you can buy convertor cards to allow the 80 pin to run on the 68 pin card without denting your wallet much more?

and i think these are the same but under £4 http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/SCA-80-Pin-F-t...QQcmdZViewItem he has a few on buy it now

Re: SCSI confusion

Re: SCSI confusion
alsenior, how much would you be after for the 39160, as thats the one my mate has, which i'm trying to convince him to trade me for building his new PC :D
like i said, i've got the 4 18.4GB drives, which would fit in the drive cage for a TJ04. Would the converters also fit, allowing the cables to attach? or would i need some special rack for them?

Re: SCSI confusion
£20 inc for the card. i'll throw in some 80pin to 68 pin converters aswell

Re: SCSI confusion
4 4-pins?:D
could you confirm that the converters will work if the 4 drives are placed in a HDD cage?

Re: SCSI confusion
they are the same converters gonzo liked to
