    A little bit stuck

    So as you guys know my 8800GTS died a death; I went and bought a cheapish 7600gs to replace it - I now get Sidnal out of range - try other res errors from my monitor

    Any idea on the quick way of fixing this as i have some important data on the HDD.

    Re: A little bit stuck

    What resolution is the monitor trying to run? And is it from start up or just in windows?

    Re: A little bit stuck

    it may be trying to run a higher res..normally you need a monitor set in the resolution that windows was in to start with.

    If you need the files start in safe mode. strike F8 a few times on start up.

    Re: A little bit stuck

    when in safe mode you set you default graphics to VGA in device manager and then reboot. EDIT: ignore that then..

    or you could try this in windows when it tells you monitor is out of range.

    Don't touch other than to right click (or use the right click button on the keyboard)

    Right Click, press up once and then press enter.

    Press tab 4 times then the right arrow 4 times.

    Then press tab 3 times and the the left arrow a couple of times and press enter.(this is changing the resolution down)

    No idea if that will work lol and thats for XP

    i wanted t try that but couldnt remember the sequence.. thnx

    you know they should make an eaier fix for it

    it would be sensible to have a boot running driver cleaner;

    im not sure if its a conflict between 8800 and 7600 drivers eithr

    Re: A little bit stuck

    Doubt it, Safemode loads generic VGA drivers for the precise reason of ruling out 3rd party driver/device conflicts from preventing a sucessful boot, the problem is elsewhere.

    Re: A little bit stuck

    The problem is that Windows is defaulting to the 'safe' refresh rate of 60Hz, but your card is actually putting out a vertical rate of 59.8Hz, which is just a bit too low for your monitor. I suspect that you actually need to increase the refresh rate to get a picture.

    If you have an emergency boot disk that will allow you to edit the Windows registry then you can alter the default refresh as detailed here. If not, then try the following modification of staffsMike's suggestion:

    After having fully booted up, don't touch or move the mouse.
    <Right-click key>
    <Up-arrow>
    <Enter>
    <Press TAB key 4 times>
    <Press left-arrow key 4 times>
    <Press Alt-V>
    <Press TAB key 5 times>
    <Press Left-arrow twice>
    <Press TAB twice>
    <Press the down-arrow once>
    <Press Enter>

    That should increase the vertical refresh rate to 70Hz.

    well here is a twist - i had a look at my 8800 and noticed a loose wire; having soldered this back into place (you cant even see it) it seems to be working fine - now it seems ive bouhg tthat card for nothing; will test the 8800 and see if it dies
