Re: Im building a Gaming PC

    - 8600GT isn't a gaming card really, try the 320mb 8800GTS or somthing like a 512mb x1950 if your budget is tight
    - Buy a better brand of PSU i.e. Corsair 520w
    - Ditch the 680i board for a P35 board. Alot cheaper and less issues
    - The case you've listed comes with a 450w PSU...Don't use it!! It'll be cheap and nasty.
    - Not sure where that Kingston ram is from, but it looks over priced to me for 2x 1gb sticks.

All will work fine with Vista.

Where are you shopping? Scan.co.uk prices are def cheaper than those you listed above.

What monitor are you using? Whats the native res?

So what gaming card would you recommend?

by better brand do you mean AMD?

Would that sort of motherboard be in the same price range as the 680i?

    See above for recommendations.

I was talking about a better brand of PSU i.e. Corsair 520w (as above)

As for mobo, look at the following:

and i'd generally steer clear of asus boards

but generally, a top-end spec for not much cash

I assumed he had Vista, monitor etc as he didnt list any of that in his first post. Just components - is that right OP?

The Asus P35 boards are pretty good from what Ive seen.

For £600 its a top PC for gaming.

IME, Asus wouldn't know how to write a BIOS if they were all force-fed ASL manuals until they died from internal hemorrhaging. whilst those problems manifest themselves on linux more than windows, it speaks to me of deep-rooted incompetence and misunderstanding of how computers work

    Alternative :

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=541780
    case £25

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=632053
    C2D E6550 2,33 £107.50 and then over clock it.

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=615603
    880GTS 640 meg £235.

Better graphics card with more rm so when you stick all the AA and AF on you wont suffer slow down because of such a small frame buffer on the card.

Re: Im building a Gaming PC

    Thanks for all the help.

Its the 1st time ive built my own PC, so your help has been brilliant. The PC i have decided to go for is:

    Graphics Card LN17575 320MB EVGA 8800GTS, PCI-E (x16), Mem 1600MHz, GPU 500MHz, 96 Streams, 2x Dual Link DVI-I/HDTV £179.99 http://www.scan.co.uk

    CPU LN19275 Intel Core 2 Duo E6750, S775, 2.66 GHz, 1333MHz FSB, Conroe Core, 4MB Cache, Retail £122.19 http://www.scan.co.uk

    RAM LN14277 2GB (2x1GB) CorsairTwinX XMS2, DDR2 PC2-6400 (800), 240 Pins, Non-ECC Unbuffered, CAS 4-4-4-12, EPP £66.96 http://www.scan.co.uk

    Motherboard LN18794 Gigabyte GA P35-DS3P, iP35 Express, S 775, PCI-E x16, DDR2 1066/533/667/800, SATA II, SATA RAID, ATX 86.94 http://www.scan.co.uk

PSU LN15216 520W Corsair HX Series Modular PSU, ATX, EPS12V, whisper quiet, 5 year warranty £64.50 http://www.scan.co.uk

    Case Atx Silver X-Blade 450 w save £39.00 http://www.goldchip-uk.com

    DVD Drive LN19006 Samsung SH-S203/BEBN 20x DVD±R, 16x DVD±DL, DVD+RW x8/-RW x6, SATA, Black, OEM inc. Nero £18.67 http://www.scan.co.uk

    HDD LN17225 320 Gb Samsung HD321KJ Spinpoint T166, SATA300, 7200 rpm, 16MB Cache, 9 ms, NCQ £44.05 http://www.scan.co.uk

    What do you's rekon?

    Couple of questions tho:

    1. Why do you recommend a 320MB graphics card over a 512?

    2. Do you think a 520W power supply will be able to cope ok with a PC of this spec. Would a 600W not be better?

    Cheers

Re: Im building a Gaming PC

Ram over 256MB is currently not all that important. Processing speed is.

8800GTS is over twice the performance of the 8600GT.

That is just the first benchmark I clicked on, but from memory it seems representative.

A good 520W will easily cope with that PC and more besides.

Re: Im building a Gaming PC

Swap the motherboard for an Abit, the Gigabyte BIOS leaves a lot to be desired:

    - Abit IP-35 ~ £84.94

And if you're not overclocking save a few quid and change the memory:

    - 2GB Corsair TwinX PC5400 4-4-4-12 ~ £52.33

    Very nice spec.

EDIT: Can I persuade you to pick a different case?
