Scaling up DVD's... What do I need?

I'm wondering if its possible to upscale my DVD's from my computer to my TV and if it is, what do I need?

We just got a new Sony Bravia 40D3000 TV and although the DVD's we've already watched on it look fantastic, but afaik there not playing at the 720p that the TV can play. (some clarification on this would be great as I could really be talking out of my arse here) -- Our current setup is with an old Sanyo DVD connected over an old SCART cable.

Now what I was wanting to do is connect my pc to the TV with a HDMI cable (using a DVI to HDMI adapter)
Is there anything else I need to this or will I just need to change the resolution on my computer to that of the TV and then play the DVD full screen.

I really dont know too much about this (as you can properly tell) and want to know if its even worth the hassle of it all. Just typing this is confusing me so good luck to everyone else, and cheers to all help!

well just set the computer to the res your screen can take so assuming its 720 use 1280x720, or if its a 1080 screen 1920x1080

Re: Scaling up DVD's... What do I need?

It's already upscaling, the TV is upscaling the DVDs to 720p

The only question is whether you're computer/dvd player/games console etc can do a better job of upscaling than the TV can?

Re: Scaling up DVD's... What do I need?

I use a VGA cable from my PC set to 1360x768 on my Sony 32S2530 which plays DVDs and HD movies just great

I would say that your TV would prefer to receive a signal that corresponds to it's native resolution, whether anyone could detect the difference may be a different matter

This link might give you some pointers

You dont need to use mediaportal though, just ffdshow and media player will do the job.
