Random Lockups On New Build
So the story of my new build takes another turn. After needing to clear my CMOS on friday before I could boot up, today I seem to be suffering from random lockups. 4 times today I have needed to hit the reset button, twice it locked up while I was AFK and came back to a 'dead' computer, once it locked up while playing LOTRO and once locked up just surfing the net. The only change made was the install of todays MS update KB931174. I also have a problem with Nero Home crashing and Vista doing the finding a solution thingy. Anyone got any ideas?
Hardware: Q6600 (stock), 8800GTS 640Mb, 4Gb RAM, Vista Premium x64.
Re: Random Lockups On New Build
Reseting the cmos could of reset the settings in the BIOS so you should probably go through it all again setting everything.
Other than that we'd need more details.
Re: Random Lockups On New Build
I did set all my bios settings again on friday after clearing the CMOS. Had no problems what so ever on saturday. Like i said the only thing that has changed today was the install of the latest MS Auto Update. What other infomation do you need?
Re: Random Lockups On New Build
well full specs, what ram, psu, graphics card model (is it one of the factory overclocked one?)
Anti-virus, anti-spyware, drivers
When you say lockup what exactly happens? does the whole thing just freeze as it is and you get no responce from anything?
Why did you have to clear the cmos?
Re: Random Lockups On New Build
Q6600 at stock speeds, XFX 8800GTS 640Mb, Abit IP35-E, 4Gb Corsair XMS2 667Mhz, 500W BlueStorm 2 PSU. Got AVG Free running as my anti virus, Windows Defender for anti spyware, drivers are up to date.
Well the two times i have been at my computer when it locked up it did exactly that, there was no response from mouse or keyboard and everything on screen just froze.
I still do not know why i needed to clear the CMOS on friday, thursday night the computer shut down fine but then wouldnt boot up friday morning.
The only other thing that has changed is the fact last night i put the side of my case back on and pushed it into position under my desk.
Re: Random Lockups On New Build
Have you checked your temps/that the fans are working?
Have you checked to see what your reported voltages are on the rails?
Have you tried running with just 2 sticks of RAM?
What's the mobo?
Re: Random Lockups On New Build
All fans are go, Antec 900 so an extra 4 fans there (all on low havent played with their settings yet). According to the aBit EQ software, CPU temp is 40 degrees C (doesnt state each individual core tho), system temp is 27, PWM (whatever that is) is 53
It also says my CPU voltage is 1.14V, DDR2 is 1.78V, CPU VTT 1.20V, MCH 1.25V, ATX+12 12.21V, ATX +3.3Vis 3.26V.
Readins taken while playing Lord Of The Rings Online at Very High GFX settings
Motherboard is as above, not yet tried with just 2 sticks of RAM, although my last crash was now over 7 hours ago, might have passed.
Re: Random Lockups On New Build
DDR voltage looks low. IIRC those sticks are supposed to run at 1.9V. TBH CPU Voltage looks low too. What are you using to take the measure?
Re: Random Lockups On New Build
1.78 v is low as Thorsson has stated 1.9v is required. Although if your using the AbituGuru windows utility it could be a little off.
Check in the bios uGuru utility under voltages. Set to user defined and set to the required voltage.
I would also run memtest on each stick of ram, 1 at a time.

Re: Random Lockups On New Build
I just used the abit software to get those readings, anything better i should use rather than reboot to bios?
Re: Random Lockups On New Build
Your freezes are probably due to your rig not been stable. As the guys say your mamory voltage apears low. This could be the cause of the instability.
Memory voltage in most motherboards defaults to around 1.8~1.9v (these are the [Auto] settings) Most decent mamory runs with a voltage >2.0v, in exttreme casesthis may cause the pc not tio start but most commonly you get occasional memory errors. Solution is easy enter bios & set memory voltage to that given in memeory specs.
it's best to run memtest &/orOrthos to check stability(overnight run is probably best.)
Re: Random Lockups On New Build
Ok gonna go set my RAM voltage to 1.9V and see what happens.
Re: Random Lockups On New Build
Did setting Ram to 1.9v work?
Re: Random Lockups On New Build
Well i only upped it to 1.85V in bios which is giving it a actual voltage of 1.84V. No problems today at all.
Re: Random Lockups On New Build
Problem solved? Lets hope so and a big :hexlub:
