    PCI-E bus width

    Hi guys,

    Just a quick question. After reading another thread I checked my PCI-E bus width in CPU-Z and noticed it states "Link Width x8....Max Supported x16"

    The original poster suggested for a 8800GTS it should be x16, I'm using a 7900GT here on a slightly overclocked (2.53Ghz) X2 4200+, am I going to be getting a reduced performance because of this?

    Performance does seem good, I've got the card clocked half way to GTX speeds:

    GTX = 650 / 1600
    GT = 520 / 1500
    Me = 600 / 1550

    But I thought it was worth putting the question to you lot!

    Cheers

    Re: PCI-E bus width

    I have ran and tested with futuremark 05/06 my 8800gts @8x and x16 on my msi p6n sli fi

    05=16931-MSI P6NSLIFI - E4300@3.2Ghz-1.36(bios)-8800GTS(Stock)-160.02Drivers-PCIE-8x

    05=16985-MSI P6NSLIFI - E4300@3.2Ghz-1.36(bios)-8800GTS(Stock)-160.02Drivers-PCIE-16x

    06=9634-MSI P6NSLIFI - E4300@3.2Ghz-1.36(bios)-8800GTS(Stock)-160.02Drivers-PCIE-8x

    06=9827-MSI P6NSLIFI - E4300@3.2Ghz-1.36(bios)-8800GTS(Stock)-160.02Drivers-PCIE-16x

    I tested due to the fact I needed the second graphics slot for a 3rd monitor setup

    Re: PCI-E bus width

    Looking at those results of the above poster, the GTS only just trickles over needing more than 8x. Its not a massive cause to worry, but worth changing it if you can.

    Re: PCI-E bus width

    Looking at the results of the GTS it shows that in 05 it's well within the margin of error between the two, in 06 it's a slightly bigger difference but again some leeway to allow for differences in the runs.

    I think the only way you can try it out and see is do a similar test, set it to run at 16x and run 3DMark06/05 three times on each set up, that way you get an average to work on.
