    OK thanks both for the confirmation. I didn't think (and couldn't see how) it could be done but some of the comments in the thread had prompted me to wonder. RAID0 and RAID1 it is then

    My calculations were off slightly due to RAID 1 taking up twice the space. After formatting, a 500GB disk will become approx. 465GB. Therefore, after taking off 100GB (from each drive) for the 100GB RAID 1 volume, you are left with 365GB free on each disk, resulting in a 730GB RAID 0 volume.
