I have a computer which will not read my new memory stick. I am told it is USB2. Is there any way round this?

It should read it, most of the time they're backwards compatible.
It should work..just slowly.
Failing that a USB2 PCI card.
If you plug a USB 2 device in to a USB 1 port, sometimes a messages pops up advising you would be better plugging in to a USB 2 port but it should still work.
I have an ancient (and only) PC that's USB 1.0/1.1 (have no idea), and the OS simply pops a balloon saying "This device could work faster", that's all. Either the USB port or the memory stick is busted.
have you tried in all the usb slots, including the ones at the back?
Does the device work on other computers?
What OS are you running? - Windows xp?
