Yeah your rig is fine mate. If you plan on any HUGE overclocks you might want some slightly better overclocking ram like crucial ballistix but thats only if you're trying to take the q6600 over 3.6GHz which won't happen on an artic freezer anyway.

I prefer acrtic silver 5 thermal paste though. Very good results.
Doh i did want the artic silver 5, used it on my current rig still got some left but its probably very funky after 3 years, but i forgot to change it thanks for the heads up.

Atleast thats one mistake avoided cheers mike.

Btw as i'm new to the forums how do i thank people for there help can't seem to find the button for it must spread some love around.

And i dont plan on pushing the cpu that far as i'm not that experienced in ocing and cant afford the extra cash to water/phase change cool. I did think of going for some dominator ram which has the same cas timings of 4-4-4-12 but as i only plan to go to around the 3ghz mark i didnt think the extra cost for some flashy heatsinks was worth it. Plus i really dont want to overclock to far as i being a bit of a novice im likely to fry something and with the amount im spending that would hurt.

Ps as for the ram you mentioned im getting all my stuff from scan as its only a 15 min drive away and ive never had any problems with there customer service. Sadly though their range of ram is to put it mildly abit limited.

Yeah most of us on here use scan as we get free delivery (as will you once you get to 25 posts)

They are very limited for ram though I usually go elsewhere.

I think after a certain amount of posts you get a thank user button where the quote and quick reply buttons are...might already be there.

Oh and you can do unlinked overclocking with that board.

Essenatially means you can tell the RAM to run a particular speed and the CPU to run a particular speed which can be quite handy and very easy to do

Thanks for the advice on the overclocking, i think i need to do alot of reading up before i attempt it and to also allow time for the thermal paste to bed in properly. As for the free delivery it's a very nice offer from scan but as i'm only a short drive away 15 mins, i doubt i'll use it.

Don't want to wait for a delivery van i'd much rather use my shiny new tech porn straight away

Yeah i'm the same when i'm in stafford. Normally just drive up to overclockers unless the price is seriously different.

Wouldn't touch overclockers with a barge pole bought a router from them a while back a linksys which had a hardware fault returned it several times at my own expense (tried to claim postage costs back but they refused). 4 different routers all had the exact same issue which linksys support said was common in that model. In the end after refusing a refund i binned it now i won't touch linksys or overclockers.

Still i guess it's all down to which csr you get but i've never had a single problem with scan even when i bought the wrong type of ram no restocking fee or testing fee just a "thats np it happens, ram still works so go order what you want at the desk"
Plus the convenience of it being just down the road is a big plus, i would recommend scan to anyone there service is faultless.

    Re: New Rig advice

SLi's kinda daft unless you're getting two top end cards straight away.

By the time you come to buy the second card there'll be something that's the same price and kills two GTX's in terms of performance, and then there's the heat, space, power and driver issues. Plus none of the currently available cards are any good in DX10 anyway so it's not future proof at all.

    I'd seriously avoid it.

I'd get a nice P35 board, a less OTT PSU, a Scythe 'Quiet Drive' for the Raptor, and a Scythe Miné instead of the AC Freezer 7 Pro.

    Re: New Rig advice

Couldn't tell you about the P5K WS but I've heard very good things about both of these:

    - Asus P5K-E ~ £103.86
    - Abit IP-35 Pro ~ £119.84

And the Miné should fit any S775 board so you have nothing to worry about.

    Re: New Rig advice

Ok tweaked a few things went for a less ott psu, got a copy of vista 64 bit as my current xp is 32 bit and won't allow me to use all my ram. Won't pay out for a copy of 64 bit xp pro when it'll be obselete in a year or two.

    Current set up

    2x 2GB (2x1GB) CorsairTwinX XMS2, DDR2 PC2-6400 (800), 240 Pins, Non-ECC Unbuffered, CAS 4-4-4-12, EPP £56.64 £133.10

    1x Antec 900 - Nine Hundred Ultimate Gamer Case w/o PSU £58.89 £69.20

    1x 150 Gb Western Digital WD1500ADFD Raptor Enterprise, SATA150, 10000 rpm, 16MB Cache, 4.6 ms, NCQ £115.49 £135.70

    1x Intel Core 2 Quad-Core Q6600 G0 SLACR, 95W, S775, 2.40 GHz, 1066MHz FSB, 8MB Cache, Retail £149.99 £176.24

    1x 22" Samsung SM-226BW Black Widescreen LCD, 1680x1050, 3000:1, 300 cd/m2, 2 ms, VESA £199.99 £234.99

    1x 5pcs Akasa Black Hook & Loop Re-Usable Cable Ties £1.99 £2.34

    1x Creative Soundblaster X-Fi Platinum Fatal1ty Champion Series Retail £98.79 £116.08

    1x 768Mb BFG Technology 8800GTX OC2, PCI-E (x16), Mem 2000MHz, GPU 626MHz 128Streams HDTV/2 x DVI-I £304.89 £358.25

1x Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound for CPU and Chipset Coolers £3.79 £4.45

    1x Scythe Miné Quiet Heatpipe CPU Cooler S478, S775, S754, S939, S940 compatible £20.57 £24.17

1x 620W Corsair HX Series Modular SLi PSU, ATX, EPS 12V, whisper quiet, 5 year warranty £73.99 £86.94

    1x Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate 64Bit 1Pk OEM (DVD) £97.89 £115.02

    1x Abit IP-35 Pro, iP35 Express, S 775, PCI-E (x16), DDR2 667/800, SATA II, SATA RAID, ATX £101.99 £119.84

    Total cost £1580

So a few questions is the psu ok for q6600 GO chips website doesn't say anything about it being ok for quad core chips..... it just says ok for duel core.

Can anyone recommend another better p35 mobo available from scan or is my current choice of an abit ip35 pro a good one? Anyone know anything about the asus p5k ws?
