Question Am i doin somethign wrong?

Hello, (mite aswell be polite! hehehe ) sorry if my grammar and punctuation is a lil off......never was very good with it!

well the thing is i need some quick advice so if any of you are nocturnal like me then i hope you can be of assitance if not then its ok i guess ill keep looking till someone does help out! Well let me get to the point...........thing is i just purchased a new graphics card, because my old one was rather old (Matrox G400 - i kno oh my god that is old! ) well now i have a very nice spangly new one.......Asus Radeon 9600XT (only hope it will be a little bit more future proof so to speak!).Well now that i have installed it (or fixed it in place it) it wont work.........well not all the time.........my motherboard is also quite old (ABIT KT7A-RAID) and it does support AGP but only 2.0 and 4.0 could this be the problem????

oh i think i should add that by 'wont work' i mean it wont even boot-up not even a beep! just the steady whirr of fans! alhtough occasionally it turns on....and works beautifully!

Sounds like a possible voltage issue - what PSU you running ?

Also do you have the latest BIOS on there ?

Are you saying that it sometimes boots, and sometimes doesn't? If so, I'd be inclined to check the PSU. Whats the make and voltage?

I may be wrong so don't quote me!

Oh, and welcome to Hexus.net by the way!

    :edit: Darn, beaten to it!

    hello, welcome to the forums

    whats your full system specs?
    what cpu?
    check everythings seated properly
what psu and rating is it? what does it say on the sticker for +5v +12v and +3.3+5v combined?
make sure agp4x is on and not agp2x, i dont think this card supports it (due to agp 2x being 3v iirc not 1.5v - which would fry your card. you said it sometimes works, so this isnt whats happening)

is there any reson why it might not boot sometimes or is it compleatly random?
does it always boot cold or warm fine and not the other?

ok..........wow thank you very much to all of you that replied! Im blown away truly.....usually nuthing happens hehehe!
Well ok.........lets see one at a time
1)the PSU is a HiperPower 420W and about the rating errm gonna have to get back to you on that tomorrow sorry guys ive had to come to the uni lib to get info therefore the details will have to wait.....silly me (scan doesnt have the pic for it either!but this is wat it does say "The highest +5 VSB (3A)." wat that means im not too sure since i am just a amateur).
    2) No sorry havent touched the BIOS apart from the necessary but it was happenin before and then when i changed it it still happens!
    3) The CPU is AMD Athalon 1.2GHz, the memory is 512MB SDRAM, sound card : Creative Soundblaster Audigy 2LS, and a U.S. Robotics Network card and thats it at the mo.........unless i have missed something!
    4) Unfortunately i have already checked the seating of it all.........didnt want to start kickin up a fuss when it was something simple like that hehehehe!
    5) The motherboard supports AGP2X and 4X and i have set it to 4X but once again it deosnt always boot.
    6) this one im slightly confused about what you mean.......i think its completely random but i must admit when the room (student hehehe) is cold (16C) then it doesnt........but if i have the heating on for a couple of minutes.......(18C) then after pushing the on swith three or four times it boots up! so i dont know what thats suppose to mean.
Once again thanks........first time i used this site and its quite good.....shud believe what i read!

ooops its me again sorry forgot to add that
i think i shud say that i assume its the grpahics card as the pc wont boot up and that is wat i meant by not booting up........not even teh bit where it tells you your PC specs as such.............and i dont think thats the hard drive problem.

when you said checked the seating of it all, does that mean every other card in your machine? Maybe you knocked something when fitting the new one or something. Try reseating all the cards again.

Also if you put your old card back in, does it boot properly each time?

unfortunately my old grpahics card is 300miles down the road in my other pc! so i have absolutely no way of checking to see if it will boot up.........and yeah i reseated all the cards cos all the cards are new.............do you think it could have anything to do with the heat thing as stated by silentdeath?
